2000 406 Hdi 90 compared to 2004 Mondeo TDci 90

Post by eoin27 »

My mate bought a mondeo the other day with 87k on the clock. It is so sweet to drive over my Pug with 152k for a few seemingly simple things:

Firstly, the suspension is firmer yet more comfortable. If i go over bumpy roads in the Pug I feel like i'm doing damage to it.

Secondly, It grips to no end. The Pug has pretty good grip but the mondeo holds on to the road with no effort at all

Thirdly, the gearchange. The pug has awful gearchange. Its like stirring porridge when looking for any gear. I know its not just my car cos I drove a lot of 406's. Would anyone please tell me why it has such a terrible gearchange? The Mondeo is so sharp and precise.

One more thing, THE ENGINE. This is where I was proud of my puggy pug. The Beast in mine, despite being way older, has way more low range torque and overall boost from the turbo and, although she revs a bit higher, is smoother to drive.
The mondeos powersource sounds more modern but hasnt got the pace to keep up.

P.s STYLING (IMAO)

The pug has the ticket on the outside styling with its beautiful face and chrome but the interior of the mondeo is bang up to date.

This concludes my little report. any questions/comments are appreciated

The Mondy is a fine handling machine (my dad's got an 05 model).

The gearchange on fords can be nice and snickerty BUT it won't stay like it, or rather the gears on the oily end of the stick won't stay like it.

Chassis design has moved on a fair bit and the 406 is showing it's age a bit now but it was never meant for hooning around in. I would rather spend 4hours driving my 406 than an Audi A4 with rock hard sussy.

Overall, the Peugeot will outlast the Ford. How many R reg Mondy's do you see compared to 406's 8)

Good Point. The old mondeos between 96-00 are looking tatty at best and even the D8 looks better than them let alone the D9

The Mundaneo is crap. My daughter had one as a loan car when her HDI Rapier was T-Boned & written off.
She hated it, :? so I took it out with her to see what I thought, Rubbish. :!: If this is "modern cars" keep 'em.
Acres of black hard plastic :frown: , & when I opened the glove box it fell at my feet.
She now has a HDI Exec estate & loves it.

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

I saw a rusty one the other day, a right state it was, I think the owner doesn't care for it, in fact I took a pic...........

My first company car was a 2001 New shape Y reg Mondeo Zetec Tdi 115 BHP(Not commonrail version)at a cost of £14500 (discounted) when I got it, it was an absolutely brilliant machine, the critics now say it was a more reliable set up than the TDCi.
I did 87000 miles in it in 3 years and it never missed a beat. 50 mpg was achievable whether around town or bombing up and down the M1. Next car I got was a new shape Focus. Petrol. And it was shite!

The problem I found with the Mondeo was the interior wasn't hard wearing, the plastic interior door handles started to de-laminate, the leather gaiter and steering wheel peeled and the seats (mine were cream / beige fabric) lost their support relatively fast.

The gearbbox was a peach as well.

Still, those days are no more and I like my 406, its got enough oomph and all the toys. I wouldn't swap it for a comparible Mondeo Zetec (well maybe for the 2.5V6!).

WOW that jade green 406 is beautiful. well maintained. Nice job with installing the leather. The chrome inserts were very well applied too. kudos. You're a man after my own heart :)
