I think you left off the bit where I said I junked the course because the business side was doing my head in.

What about all the stuff posted on here wrt programming etc.? np. did you get any of this? Is it all cristal clear, or meaningless jargon? It means nothing to me (ah Vienna). Ok, I can run dos commands but that's about it and dos won't get me anywhere with Linux because it's based on Unix.

Anyway, would you call someone who can change a tyre a master mechanic? Or someone who can change a bulb an electrician? Or even someone who couldn't bring themself to kill a fly a humanitarian? I didn't think so.
I was joking about you being a computer 'expert' and I know less than anyone on here about computers, heck it's all I can manage just to post on here!

Sorry if you thought I was having a pop at you, I wasn't :(

Sorry, this is giving me a bad time so I'm a bit short tempered. You know, poised with keyboard in both hands resisting the urge to smash it over the monitor type short tempered.

My problem now seems to be that, along with a username and a password, my isp has supplied me with a phone number for my dsl. I've stuck the username and password in but I've no idea what to do with this phone number and, thinking about it, I don't know what to do with it in windows either! I know I configured windows to use it, I can see it every time it connects but how did I get it in there?? I took this laptop home with me last night to try and figure it out but got nowhere. Am I thick or what??

So I figure that, if I can work out what to do with it in windows I'm half way to working it out for linux but searching on Google all I can find is this "network connection wizard", I did all that already, put in my username, password twice and worked through it no problem but the end result was zero, no internet, just the dialogue box counting down to zero to try again, and again, and again, and... If the ground wasn't frozen I'd dig a big hole in the garden and go lie in it.

Cheers steve.

I can't help here but I think the following are pretty good with computers:

mjb
michaeljclarke
pyros6546
'the management'

There's quite a few on here to be honest I'm sure someone will help.

That'll be a number for connecting via a modem in case your DSL goes titsup.

So how comes it appears in the connection dialogue? Or does it? >begins to doubt own existance< Maybe I'm remembering that from my days of ISDN and dial up. The blurb here says "telefonski broj modemskih ulaz" next to the number, I just assumed it meant the adsl modem.

Will give it another try when I go home later.

Wassat then? Hmm, ISDN. It's an on-board network card, through some cat 5 to the modem which is a Siemends adsl something-or-other. No ISDN (not any more!)

Maybe I need to lie to Fedora and say it's an ISDN. Hmm, back in a bit...

Nope, I did try but all I got was a dialogue box with the friendly motto "EXCEPTION OCCURRED" at the top. Where did I put my baseball bat?

Well the usual dialup no in the uk is 0,38 for ADSL but I don't know for Croatia. Who's your ISP?

Edit: Try 0,35 Steve. It's known as the VPI/VCI if you want to have a google on it.

T-com Hrvatska

I saw 0,35 elsewhere but I actually have a phone number (see above) to use. Or rather, not use.

Are you definitely using ADSL?
If you are do you have a usb adsl modem?
You'd find life a lot easier with an adsl router. The router maintains your internet connection, there's no dialling on the PC.

Yes, I'm using ADSL, crist on a bike, even the Fedora bods are accusing me of having ISDN. Talk about clutching at straws! The laptop here is on a wireless router and that does indeed have it all stored inside but I'm not really placed to go out and buy a router for my home pc just because Fedora can't cope with what I've got. I'm skint for a start!

Well if you've already got a wireless router then run a network cable from it to your PC. They've usually got 4 LAN ports on the back; set your TCPIP settings to DHCP and it will just work :) If you need some CAT5e drop me a line, I've got miles of the stuff. If you tell me the length I'll crimp the plugs on for you.

I actually paid for the following:

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
Windows Vista Ultimate Edition

Both on OEM licences from eBuyer which is great, think vista cost £90 and MCE £50 so windows can be cheap :o)

As for Linux, forget Fedora, and go for Ubuntu, thats the XP of the Linux world! ! Will be far easier for you to install and use etc.

Wow, that's excellent! Can you do me 31,680 feet please?

Niz, I've been considering giving up with Fedora and going for Ubuntu for a few days now, could it be any worse? I'll probably wait 'til next month though as I've already busted this month's traffic allowance.

Yeah, that ebuyer's really good, it's a shame they don't deliver here
