Clicking near passenger airbag

Hey all,

Well i'm a proud owner of an 406 2.1 TD LX. Everything seems great apart from a few things, mainly a loud ticking coming from the glovebox/passenger airbag.

It ticks 5 times and waits 10 seconds and then continues this. It only does it whilst the ignition is on.

edit: sorry I didn't mention what it sounded like. I've kind of got it down to sounding like inserting an CD Changer cartridge, or a tape deck clicking but I can't see anything. I will be having a look early tomorrow morning but in the mean time, thought i'd ask.

Does anyone have any idea's on what it could be?

Check the heater/climate control panel. See if there's anything on there that causes the sound to stop. I'd suggest trying the recirc button first

It's definitely coming from the glovebox area. If you open the glovebox it gets louder.

The heater blower motor, vent selection motor and recirc flap motor are behind the glovebox amongst other things. Chances are one of those is broken

How do I diagnose/check this? The heaters seem to work fine but I haven't actually checked the car properly in the light.

Does it sound like a relay clicking?
You could pull the fuses one at a time on various circuits to narrow down your search

Presuming you've got climate control: Set the fan speed to 0 (where the bars disappear). You'll also force the a/c off doing that so you'll see ECO appear.

Press recirc twice. Wait a few secs and you should hear a faint whirring for a couple of seconds. Press recirc again and you should hear another faint whirring after a delay. That's the motor opening and closing a flap.

Do the same with the vent selection. Toggle slowly between the selection (avoid windscreen demist setting because it'll fire up the blower) and you should hear a very very faint whir. Put the fan onto a high setting and chose different vent outputs again. Check it works as it should.

If the clicking stops/changes during any of that, you've found your culprit

If not, start pulling fuses one at a time as teamster says. Be aware if you pull the stereo's fuse and you've got the original stereo in the car, you'll need to enter the code as per the handbook

I haven't got the climate control unfortunately although i noticed that when I turned on the recirc, the clicking didn't go off like it was, but I do get an odd click here and there. Once I turn it off, it comes back again!?

I Have the same problem i think it is the recur motor this stopped when i removed the ac fuse . is this easy to change

How about taking the glovebox out and looking? I've not had mine in bits but I've seen linkages dropped off and stripped gears on other cars.

Unless I'm missing something, removing the glovebox on the 406 just serves to slightly improve access from underneath because behind the glovebox is the dashboard plastic. By that I mean you'd need to take the whole dashboard out to get access... or take a dremmel to it

open the bonnet remove the plastic cover that is over the top of the pollen
filter, its on the passenger side ,remove filter and watch the flap while
someone operates the control. will eliminate one possibility

As I think someone has suggested, it is apparently the motor that controls the air that comes via the pollen filter.

Any idea on cost? I'm going to take a look at servicebox tonight when I can get my VIN.

I think the painful part will be the replacement - I don't think it's too accessible. I'll have a look while I'm raiding the blower motor from my old car tonight.
