Cam belt replacment

Post by johnd »

On the next service and MOT the trusty old pug will be creeping up to 80k (ish) and according to the garage on the 1.8 petrol 406 the belt should be changed at 82k just wondering what anyone else has been charged for a cambelt change as I have never owned a car for so long and never had to have one changed?
Still I've got to admit this is the most realiable car I ever owned only had to replace the exhaust from the middle box back and that was the org that was taken off, and anit roll bushers other than that just the usual tyre and brake change think i have got away light so far.
The wifes punto has had to have both front legs replaced 2 new battries hand brake cable and clutch replacment along with alternator and the car only has 46k on it and it is 2 years younger than the 406.

I'm another one who needs to know a bit about the cam belt.
I have a 2.0L turbo exec D8 and only had her for a year but I think the cambelt is comming to change time from what I can see in the service history. How long would/should the cambelt last, or when would anyone else get it changed?
From what I can gather in the scattered history with it, something was done with the cambelt at 92K changed I think, it's now on 136K. From what I hear, if you make alot of short journeys, take a bit of life off the belt, and it should be changed/tightened every 2 years, is this right?
I am so paranoid about the cam belt being pretty much the most important part on the car, that goes, so does the car :| What are peoples view on this?

My tubby's last cambelt lasted over 100,000 miles, mostly motorway.

If you change it yourself you're looking about £30 and a good day's work. if you go to an independent garage about £300, if you go to a dealer you're looking at around £700
