Can I be contraversial about the smoking ban

Post by Welly »

As an ex-smoker I have watched with interest as the smoking ban has taken hold in this country and want to share with you my thoughts about it all.

The other week I ventured into my main town and was walking along the high street with her 'outdoors' and the tea pot lids. This high street is probably typical now of many towns and goes something like: Shop - Bar - Cafe - Shop - Bar - Bar etc etc. along it's length.

It was extremely difficult to get past all the smokers who spill out of the bars for a smoke and many times we were forced to step into the road to get along. The other thing that allerted me was how incredibly strong the smell of smoke was outside the buildings (as it was a fairly calm day) so in other words we were effectively inhailing all their smoke as we walked past!

Now I am not complaining at smokers here at all but it got me thinking that surely a non-smoker is far less likely to suffer passive smoking in a modern well ventilated bar than walking past hundreds of outdoor smokers exhailing at face-level on the pavements.

Apart from the odd place I can't really remember anywhere decent that was *full* of choking smoke before the ban - and in any case if you were that bothered then most places had smoking/non-smoking areas anyway.

The other thing is how much time and money is lost in businesses for all there workers nipping outside for a ciggy, it must be millions.

What do you all think?

Oh - I am also getting ready for the April Budget as it appears that strong lager is having it's revenue TREBLED in an effort to stop chavs drinking it and getting sick and smashing the place up. FFS I work really hard, and the one and only drink I enjoy (Stella) is getting hammered with Tax :frown: will pushing the price up really stop drunken teenagers or just drive them to something else???

I've been in places where there's actually been more people outside chatting, drinking and smoking than there's been indoors. Happens quite a bit...

Well JD Weatherspoons have lost nearly £4 million in 6 months due to the ban http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7282768.stm

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

And where will the £8billion that the government get in tobacco taxes come from then??,
and whatever happened to choice !!! instead of a carpet ban on smoking in public
places why were pubs restraunts clubs etc not allowed to choose if they went non-smoking
or smoking then there would be a choice instead of depriving these businesses of much needed
revenue especially in working class area's ?? and who do you find more obnoxious, some bloke
having a fag while he's sitting in the middle of nowhere fishing or some old bloke sitting in the corner
of his local having a puff with his pint or the off their head yobbo's pissed out their skulls prepared to
stab or kick to death some innocent person for what in their drunken state they call fun

The thing that I've noticed is that pubs and night clubs stink of piss and B.O, and a lot of the non smokers are standing outside with their mates while they have a fag!
Don't get me wrong, I don't want to be smoking forever but I do enjoy it. I don't like being told what's good and bad for me, the government or whatever think tank are constantly changing their minds anyway

The £8billion the government lose, maybe regained by treating less patients with cancer thru smoking or other smoking diseases.

Why should none smokers be subjected to the risk of cancer from passive smoking by inconsiderate filthy disgusting people who smoke.

If there were smoking and non-smoking establishments you would
have the "choice" not to be a passive smoker.
You admit that you like to drive your car fast, be it on the track or on
the road, if you were unlucky whilst doing this you could have an accident
and need hospital treatment that costs money, ppl are not complaining
about this because it was your "choice" to do it.
Did you know that it costs more in policing and treatment of drink related crimes
and injuries at the weekends than the whole cost of treating smokers and smoking
related illnesses.
You say you dont want to run the risk of cancer through passive smoking, i would
like to be able to walk through the town centre in the evening's without fear of
having my head kicked in by some pisshead.
this is supposed to be a democratic country but i dont remember a vote being
held on this issue, and what would happen if they decided to ban alcohol.
And i dont consider myself to be filthy , i bathe or shower everyday nor
do i consider myself disgusting and last year i met three guy's off this
site and i bet they didn't even know i smoked . :P :)
