hi all i would just like to point out that ALL humans HAVE CANCER CELLS and it only takes a "trigger" to set them off growing....

Yes everybody knows thats smoking is a "trigger" but how many ppl realise that a "fall , fight, or any other cell damaging mishap " is also a trigger of these cancer cells....

so with that said.......(scenario) man who doesnt smoke goes to pub spends hard earnt money on over taxed premier lager gets pissed staggers outside trips over the curb and falls down ....three months later is diagnosed with cancer
but its blamed on passive smoking.........hmmmmmm

My thoughts on the smoking ban as a smoker have diluted over the months.
(Feel free to shoot me for being a smoker, I smoke and I'm proud of it! )

I used to be really militant at the start of the ban but have softened up over it a little.
For a start it means I no longer go out so I save money, secondly if it gets the righteous bores off our back about "killing" then with our "filthy" habit and lets me have some piece and quiet - It's a good thing :)

What I find really funny is the MPs bleeting on about the damage the outdoor patio heaters for smokers are doing to the sky :)

Can't have it both ways sweet-cheeks, Lung cancer from passive smoking or dead planet (if you believe in that.)

I also believe that the effects of passive smoking just like greenhouse gasses are over blown.
A few smoke particles per million air isn't going to make your lungs die over night, otherwise us smokers would have exploded first time we had a drag
I'd agree being in a smoky room day and night over years isn't going to be good for you though, just as being a smoker isn't a healthy thing.

people being stabbed shot and kicked to death by drunken doped up teenagers,Utility
companies being allowed to charge what the fook they like !!!

What does this government do ???

OOOOH there's a minority group over there that dont like smokers lets spend millions
on a anti smoking campaign and ban !!!

For Fook's sake get real and deal with the IMPORTANT issues first !!!!!

I do a bit of environmental consultancy Eric, and I can tell you without a shadow of doubt that Global Warming is not a myth. However the reasons for it are very questionable. I personally reckon that it's mostly a naturally ocurring phenomenon (planet warms up, sea heats up and releases a hell of a lot of CO2 into the atmosphere, which traps heat so the planet gets even warmer etc etc.....). However I'm also certain that we're not helping the situation and that our emissions are making a very small contribution to the problem. :?

One thing that made me laugh recently is the introduction of the F-Gas regs. Basically about 10 years ago we were made to change all the refrigerant in our Air Con systems bacause it was nasty stuff that contained Ozone Depleating Substances, and therefore leakage of that gas was contributing to the hole in the ozone layer. Then in 2006 they introduced the F-Gas regs, eventually came into force last month. What does it do? It makes you monitor and prevent leakage of Flourinated Gasses from Air Con and refrigerant systems, why? Because they have found out that many of the "new" refrigerant gases actually contain Greenhouse Gas  . Nice one boys, solve one problem by the introduction of another!

So no patio heaters, in fact no heaters of any kind, co air con, no mechanically propelled vehicles of any kind, no electricity, no water unless you live by a natural spring.... oh and kill every cow because they fart methane!

Exactly, where do you draw the line?
We could go back to living in caves, but I don't see anyone but the most ardent of tree climbers being happy with that one.

I think it's just a matter of doing what we can without being silly. The cooling and warming of the Earth is a cyclical event, but it's not something you want to make worse really: the uk depends on the gulf stream for it's temperate climate and if anything happens to that you'll suddenly be reminded that the uk is on the same latitude as Siberia...

Btw did you know that the guy who invented cfcs is the same guy that drempt up putting lead in petrol? I reckon the finest thing Thomas Midgley ever did for humanity was die in a mildly amusing manner:
In 1940, he contracted polio at the age of 51, which left him severely disabled. This led him to devise an elaborate system of strings and pulleys to lift him from bed. This system was the eventual cause of his death when he was accidentally entangled in the ropes of this device and died of strangulation at the age of 55.
