Wanted 406 saloon (Now also consider 2.0 petrol Manual)
I am currently looking for a 406 to replace my aged 306 XND. I had been hoping for another 306 but i have looked at about 7 so far and all of them have been in crap condition or stupidly expensive. Much as i love the 306, its becoming more and more apparent that a good one is going to cost me nearly £3k( as i want one thats 1999 or later and only interested in 1.9TD or HDi or 1.8 petrol although 1.4 and 1.6 considered if car was A1 condition) and im just not prepared to spend that on one.
So i have started looking @ 406s and found this to be much more enouraging. They seem to be coming up cheaper and in better condition than the 306s. Plus they are more comfortable, more refined and seemingly more solid. The kind of car i am looking for should conform to the following criteria:
1. Saloon with a manual gear box and either a 1.8 petrol or a TD or HDi 90 engine.
2. Ideally post 1999 (2nd generation basically, 99-04) but older ones will be considered.
3. Ideally low - average miles.
4. No immediate work apparent (so no known faults or impending MOT expiry)
5. Good service history.
6. No modifications.
7. Price Range £1300-£2000
8. Prefereably located or viewing possible in the Midlands (ideally West Midlands).
If anyone has a car that conforms to some /all of the above let me know. Also, tips on what to look out for when buying would be appreciated.

Re: Wanted 406 saloon
THanks for the reply but id already seen and dismissed that 1. too many miles plus i think a HDi 110 would be too much to insure with my insurance company plus i dont want a car with the expensive and complicated rear brake set up and i believe the 110 has this.
Thanks for taking the time to reply though.

But you explicitly state you want a D9 with it's flaky over-complicated electronics?306to406 wrote:Ti dont want a car with the expensive and complicated rear brake set up and i believe the 110 has this.

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
Re: Wanted 406 saloon
Hello, I am currently looking at other cars and was going to try and trade my 406 in towards an Alfa 156 but all the ones I want are private sales.
Mine is a 1999 V Peugeot 406 HDi 90 GLX in Dark Blue with 108,000 miles on the clock. It is a later-style (D9?) model with the mesh grille. Has 15" alloy wheels with Michelin Energy tyres purchased brand new just before Christmas at Costco. Velour seats, 6-Disc CD Changer. Timing belt and tensioners changed January 2007 using a genuine Dayco kit at a local Engine specialists, and the bottom pulley and auxilliary belt were changed at the same time. New genuine Peugeot lift pump fitted by local Bosch specialist in February 2007. I have changed the Oil every 7k miles with Chevron (Texaco) Semi-Synth 10w40 from Costco and genuine Purflux LS923 filter. Also changed Air filter three times and fuel filter twice in the time I have owned the car (since December 2006). The bottom pulley was changed again only this week as the one fitted last year had begun to rattle on Tuesday. I have invoices for all this work and the car has service history prior to my ownership.
I commute a 50 mile round trip motorway journey to work each day. The car is fitted with a Towbar, although I have never used it and it appeared new when I bought the car. The MOT is due in July. The drivers seatbelt has begun to fray and I intended to replace this before the MOT. The bodywork is in good condition with a small dent in the drivers door where someone has opened their door into mine at work. I will attach some pictures but these were taken when I originally purchased the car, although it has not changed much, but if interest is shown I will take some more if I get home during daylight hours one day this week!
I value it at £1500, if i'm too high or too generous please someone let me know.
Thanks,
Paul

Re: Wanted 406 saloon
If the first generation (somebody explain the codes to me) was used longer than id have one, may be i will end up with one. I just think the later car is nice looking, better spec and seems to be more easily available. I doubt any peugeot is exactly strong on electronics. 306 isnt. If a 99T car in the old shape came up then id be interested if condition/mileage/price was right. Plus its hard to track down an early car with a nice interior. The execs have a lovely interior and the grey cloths are nice but that awful biscuit colour you could get seems all too common. Anyway, in my search so far, there are very few early cars coming up compared to the later car.mjb wrote:But you explicitly state you want a D9 with it's flaky over-complicated electronics?306to406 wrote:Ti dont want a car with the expensive and complicated rear brake set up and i believe the 110 has this.
Anyway my uncle and cousin work @ peugeot so i can get niggly little electric glitches sorted cheap.
My uncle had a 2001 HDi 90 and said its the best car hes ever had. Best to drive, best on fuel, top 3 on reliability and he does 30-40k miles a year.

Re: Wanted 406 saloon
how about this but im a fair millage (dorset) from you its a 98 s reg d8 1.8 with air con 86000miles cam belt just done very tidy lots of mot and tax would consider leaving full nokia hand free kit which cost me 200quid, looking for £1000
Re: Wanted 406 saloon
Yes i would certainly consider that although i couldnt come and view its for ages yet, being a final year degree student does kind of monopolise my time at the moment. Is it a 1.8? Am i right in thinking all 1.8 406s are 16v? Only the ones i have seen have either had the 1768cc 16v out of the 306 or the later 1.8s (D9) seem to have a different 1749cc engine. Ive never seen a 406 with the old 8v 1.8. Ive driver a 306 with the old 1.8 8v and it wasnt good.

Re: Wanted 406 saloon
nope its 16 valve and fairly low millage im in no hurry to sell it as its just so reliable, unless the price is right but keep it in mind its all as it should be the only thing ive done is put the 2.2hdi front breaks on it as the standard 1,8 ones are so small but its reguarly service every thing works perfect and taxed and mot'd, and i wouldnt even think of taking anything less than a £1000 hears my mobile if you have any questions 07855786220
Re: Wanted 406 saloon
You could be waiting a while to get that much - that's about the going price for a mint condition 2.0 turbo exec of the same age+mileage, or a 3.0 V6 GLX/exec with a few minor blemishesmypugscool wrote:and i wouldnt even think of taking anything less than a £1000

Re: Wanted 406 saloon
Hi Mate,
I have a 99 V REG 406LX In Navy Blue for sale if you are interested. It is however a 2.0 Petrol version.
It has climate Air Con, 6 CD multi changer, and has been my fathers before me, so its been looked after ok. It has 118k but is a sweet engine, no noices etc. New clutch fitted recently so is very easy to change gears. Elec mirrors, goot tyres, and has MOT until next December.
I am asking £1100 for this car ...if youre interested let me know.
I am located near Lichfield, Midlands.
regards

Re: Wanted 406 saloon
Thanks for leting me know but im afraid its not what im looking for, too many miles and the 2.0 petrol is too thirsty and more to insure. The only reason im considering the 1.8 petrol is because decent diesels are few and far between. They all seem to be scruffy high milers or very expensive compared the the petrol equivalents.
