External temperature sensor

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

External temperature sensor

Post by rapport25 »

Hi there, my external temperature sensor has decided to play hid and seek. Have a faulty one before which resulted in changing it no problem. Now it has a habbit of reading the temperature one day then just being blank the next any help please? And yes its a D9 :D

If they are not expensive, I'd replace it again before digging further. Could be as simple as a loose connection if it wasn't fitted 100% last time :?

Long story but it was replaced with a new complete mirror. Have known them reading the wrong temperature but never working one day and not the next. I think they are around £12 from dealer will buy one and replace that first me thinks.

Mine did this. When I brought my old exec, it didn't work and flashed a single dash. One day, for no apparent reason, it started to work, for a whole year. Then a week or two ago it started to show a silly high temp, now sits there with double dash flashing. When I get paid I'm going to the local stealers to get myself a new sensor.
I e-mailed the stealers and they said £14.95 and would have to be ordered after full payment has been taken. Also, some guys on here said the connector for it goes all the way into the door, so removing the door card seems a big job, so just snip it off and solder it on within the mirror.
It'd be nice to see how warm/cold it is outside and to give my climate a chance when it is cold as it doesn't seem to know what to do with the fan speed when trying to defrost the car.

Right. There's a thermistor in the base of the passenger wing mirror. If it goes faulty it will give duff readings; if it goes open circuit it will be as if there is no sensor plugged in and give the two dashes. Has the temperature ever shown correctly since you had the car?

It to bloody cold    But from memory.

You remove the black plastic triangular shape cover from inside the car with a flat blade screw driver.

I believe there is 3 star headed screws I think T10'S in size behind there. Undo all three.

Also a little round black plastic cover. Which has a torque screw there also T10 in size i think.Undo this one also and you should be able to pull the mirror away now.

As you do you should see a multi connector clipped to the door behind which has the wirrig for the motors heated element and the temp sensor. Just make sure its plugged in correctly as they can come loose.

If its pluggerd in correctly after turning igniton back on and still does not work. I would say temp sensor is knackered.

Hope this helps Rappy 8)

You've got manual wing mirrors so there's no temp sensor :(

The connector for electric wing mirrors is 12 pin off the top of my head; that 2 pin socket you've got isn't hooked up to anything.
When I retro fitted 'leccy mirrors I had to get the correct socket from a breakers & run my own wires into the car; earths aren't a problem, it's just getting your motor live feeds inside, heated mirror element +ve & the two temp sensor leads.
You could potentially get a temp sensor from a scrappy and run a pair of wires inside the car to the back of the trip computer; I've only done it on a D8 though.
