Are you both running Dolby 5.1 setups? You can alter the volume of the centre speaker which carries the majority of the speech, worked on my setup cos my missus complained too (Unless it's one of her programs )

Yes, I have the same "problem". Only it's not really a problem - this is how it is in cinemas, so this is replicated at home. Bloody annoying it is, though. I just have subtitles on so I can "hear" what the heck they are saying and having the effects at a moderate volume.
Our brand new extremely expensive out of date telly has some sort of automatic volume control, maybe this would help. I've not tried it myself, the 5 watts a channel speakers are incapable of deafening unless you stick your head next to them .
Where do you guys put all these bluddy speakers anyway?

I have a shelf above my TV, so centre, left and right speakers go on there. The subwoofer is on the floor by the TV stand under my AV receiver - doesn't matter where the sub is as it's not directional. And, of course left and right speakers are on the back wall either side of my bed
I wasn't expecting that! Hmm, tv in the bedroom, I got rid of mine in the end 'cos there was always something on better than sleeping. In the end it was on a trolley so I could watch it from the computer room one end of my landing and from my bath the other end. Ahh, the times I've watched the X-files on the Sci-Fi channel while in the bath at 4 am...
I have no tv at home, the tv's so crap here there's no way I'm paying for a license. The new telly is at my other half's. What I want: HDTV reciever with dolby 5.1. What my other half wants: more shoes. Then, what I can afford: f*ck all.
I've noticed recently that Sky Movies have started mucking about with the volume on their films, you also have to keep turning it up and down, but now the base level is way higher than the other broadcasts, so the film finishes and an advert comes on, or you turn over, and the whole house get's deafenend. Really pisses me off when I'm watching a film late at night and this wakes the kids up.
Also why do some channels (Eurosport springs to mind) insist on running the adverts at a considerably higher volume than the programmes

They've been doing something similar in the US for many years, I gather theres a bit of kit you can get that turns the volume off when it detects the louder adverts.
