Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

We need a thread for them to save "the mods" too much legwork. Hold on...

Before you do that, the speedo control module behind the glovebox is known to go faulty, also the sender unit on the gearbox

That's very true.
Parish, Run the engine while you've got the dash cluster out and wiggle the plugs/sockets; see if the rev counter starts behaving.

Hmm... This is bugging me now :?
On my D8 LX the rev and speedo did exactly the same as yours; a good smack on the dash made them show correctly for a second or so; cause was a dry joint somewhere on the pcb. Sorry I can't help any more Parish! :(

when you Say PCB what actually do you mean, cos when i take the clocks out there in three pieces, theres the back with wires plugged in to it then that has some sort of rods on it sticking out and the middle has holes in that the rods sit in ?

When you split the cluster you've got a green circuit board that is recessed which the dials plug into. It's this one.
Make sure that you remove the pronged clamp from the reverse side next to the yellow connector; this is a devil to get off, I used a mini stanley blade. BE VERY CAREFUL YOU DON'T CUT ONE OF THE TRACKS ON THE FLAT CABLE!
With this removed you can extract the board and get soldering!
On reassembly, bend the teeth of the clamp back in a bit so that they apply good pressure to the flat cable onto the riser connector; this can cause weird problems if one of the tracks is not making good contact.

Edit: Steve, I've got a spare instrument cluster, I'll knock up a pictorial guide sometime.
