a few Q's

Post by ianst28 »

ok so i finaly got my 406 would have got it sooner if the delightful insurance company hadn't f&^%ed up the certificate (THREE TIMES !!!!!) so i could have taxed the car earlier but hey ho i have it now
first impressions are great i had no idea just how comfortable and economical it would be so it has ticked the 2 most important boxes in my needs list
however i do have a few q's
should the accelerator feel like your pushing a large brick through really thick mud ????
the plip (ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh the bloody plip) why does it only work after i've given up all hope of it working and lost the will to live i mean it's kinda inttermitant
acceleration there doesnt seem to be any till after 2,500-3,000 by which time i've changed gear
should the engine stop like a shot boar ??????? (only when i turn it off though)
the heater fan works occasionaly doesn't sem to be any rhyme or reason to it

sorry if i've posted this in the wrong place but any help is great

ohhhhhhhhh and btw i do really really love the 406 it's just my first pug and diesel and i'm unsure about the little things

thanks guys

Hi Ian!
should the accelerator feel like your pushing a large brick through really thick mud ????
No! Check to see nothing is fouling the throttle cable and the throttle body
the plip (ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh the bloody plip) why does it only work after i've given up all hope of it working and lost the will to live i mean it's kinda inttermitant
It's the button. If you're handy with a soldering iron you can replace it. If you're totally mad like me you can unsolder the switch and take it apart to clean the contacts!
acceleration there doesnt seem to be any till after 2,500-3,000 by which time i've changed gear
Possibly Mass Air flow Meter, we've had a spate of those failing!!
should the engine stop like a shot boar ??????? (only when i turn it off though)
Not sure!
the heater fan works occasionaly doesn't sem to be any rhyme or reason to it
Do you have climate control? Possibly duff fan

Its probably the cable. If the module in the engine bay is turning fine when the cable is disconnected then it definitely is the cable. Corrosion inside the cable to be more specific. Short term: Shove a load of wd40 down it and play around with the position of the clip to the throttle body. Long term: Buy a new cable

The Diesel lump is a torquey beast and the rubber bushes holding it up take a beating everytime the engine stops. Replacing these bushes will sort that out

If you have climate control and its in auto mode, it seems to have a mind of its own. Not a problem

My key is like that. Take out the chip and scrape around the contacts on the little switch and this will clear up any dirt. Not a permanent solution though.

If the thing accelerates at those revs then it may be a dodgy turbo(I know they're usually bulletproof). The AFM is only till about 2,000revs before the turbo kicks in and unleashes hell  :frown:

thanks guy's
i forgot to say what 406 i had it's a 1.9d d8 99 lx

the heater fan was fairly easy i just checked all the wiring conections under the glove box and now it works every time

the engine stoping like a shot boar does sound like engine mounts + i'm not used to diesel i listened to my mate's 306 and it does it too

acceleration is better if i hold on to the gears longer i just thought that a big torquey engine wouldnt feel so sluggish but again i guess a good service might help this problem too

the accelerator is no better i tried wd 40 already and made sure the cable was routed properly it seems to be but i thought that the cable ran from the back of the engine to the fuel pump not across the radiator and then to the pump anyone know??????

the plip well at the moment i can lock the car using the key on the passenger door (not on the driver's door that will only unlock ) i guess cleaning it up then changing batts and re-coding could be the answer

Are you talking about splitting the switch and cleaning the dish shaped contact?
