Gearbox Problems
Hi Folks. I am new to this forum and so please be kind. I have an X reg Peugeot 2.0l Executive Estate Auto gearbox and the gearbox seems to be slipping into 3rd gear when n drive. If I use cruise control at just below 50 MPH it works fine however if I am going any faster it slips into 3rd gear and the two lights * and s start flashing. To cure this I have to stop the car and then restart it and then put it in drive and it will go OK for a short time then back to the fault. I had a scan done on the gearbox which showed up as OK on everything. Would an oil change sort out this problem or would it mean that the gearbox needs attention which would cost me more than the value of the car. I think its an AL4 gearbox.
Thanks in Advance for any help. Ronald4345.

Re: Gearbox Problems
Good Morning Ronald, welcome to the club, come in and make yourself at home. I know it's a bit early on a Sunday but the others will start surfacing in an hour or two!
Right I've personally got very very limited experience of autoboxes, but from what I understand it's always worth doing an oil change before anything else, particularly if you aren't sure that it's been correctly & regularly maintained. Heared a few stories of apparently knackered boxes being cured by some fresh oil.

Thank you DiaRees for your prompt advice. I was quoted £1100 to get the gearbox serviced and repaired locally in SE London, but I have a feeling it does not need changing as it goes into all the gears when used manually.

I've got no experience with auto transmissions so I'll just say Welcome to the club Ronald!

Re: Gearbox Problems
Many thanks to everyone for their help, I have arranged to have the gearbox oil changed tomorrow after I buy the original oil from my local Peugeot Dealer. Nice to find there are folk here with advice on nearly everything to do with the 406 as not everyone can afford the sky high prices charged by the dealers and some garages these days. Once again MANY THANKS.

Re: Gearbox Problems
if an oil change doesnt fix it, you may have a wiring fault, unlikely but possible, has the car ever been used for towing?

Re: Gearbox Problems
There's a very common wiring fault on the big Vauxhall auto boxes, puts the 'box into "limp home mode" - only works in 3rd all the time and brings a light up.

Re: Gearbox Problems
A fluid change should sort his out. Car manufacturers keep saying 'sealed for life' and 'no maintenance' on these auto's but once past 3 years or 60000 miles they're not bothered.
Have the fluid changed (if not doing it yourself) and use someone you can trust as I think there is a set procedure for draining, filling, running the gears through and checking the level properly.

Thank you Welton. Your advice has been kindly received and noted. I will ask the guy to make sure he does the work properly since he has been doing work on several Peugeot's including 406's.

Re: Gearbox Problems
I'm no auto box expert but I do know the gearbox needs it's fluid changing regularly and this is often overlooked.
I know a few people now with auto's and they all say they will never have a manual car again

Re: Gearbox Problems
I love automatic gearboxes, the problem is reduced performance and increased fuel consumption (hmm, DSG...). Plus they can be very expensive when they f*ck up (sorry) so nowdays I try to steer clear.

Take it none of those have 406s? ;)Welton wrote:I know a few people now with auto's and they all say they will never have a manual car again
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Re: Gearbox Problems
I'd love an automatic but I'm just too tight. The thought of less fuel economy and increased tax makes me stick with the stick.
A mate had an automatic Pajero for offroading once, that was awesome! Not too worried about economy for my offroad toy and it'll be old enough not cost any more in tax, so there's one of them on my shopping list I reckon.
