Not a 406 owner but read on to find out why im here

Post by mjcook1984 »

Hi im Mike and i drive a 306. ive come from the other side of pond (pug306.net.) my reason for being here is that im currently stripping a 406 sri engine to rebuild and put in my 306 not a major rebuild just pumps, gaskets, belts etc and give it a good clean.
but seeing as it isn't a standard 306 engine there isnt much information on a 306 forum so im here to pick the brains of people that have experiance with the engine. Yet again hello, i look forward to talking with you

regards

Mike

There was a guy on here once called Malachy and he fitted the turbo engine in his 306. He's not around any more but you may be able to search his posts.

I remember he had to carve a chunk out of the bulkhead to accomodate the turbo but other than that it was fairly simple.

Engine wise they are very strong (if left alone) and just new gaskets, water pump, cambelt and maybe refurbed head? would all be good. The turbo might want a refurb too?

Remember though - the 2.0T is not a racer! it's a torquey unit with low down grunt (like a diesel).

He was a very helpful member here until, like you said, he disappeared :(

There's a couple of guys here that know the oily bits of your engine (Niz for example) but by and large not many are into tuning and major engine works - more just keeping the thing going

Stick around though fella if you have questions.

It's a bit worrying when people just dissapear from forums, I'm still wondering what happened to BargainBro.

I wonder how many proper regulars there are now? 8? 10?

Still it's not quantity that counts eh?

Cannot stress this enough - they can be "tweaked" to deliver over 200bhp, but you may as well scrap the mountings and use rubber bands for all the life you'll get out of thing... Left alone however they last FOREVER! :)

Remember though welly, the 306 weighs a hell of a lot less than a 406, and 9 times out of 10 this engine was on an exec which has all the extras weighing it down too. In a 406 you can still rag it if you get to know it well enough to be able to keep it on the boost without frying the clutch, but in a small light car I reckon it'd be a blast straight off, possibly shaving well over a second over the 406s 0-60 time

One suggestion mjcook1984: replace the coolant temperature sensor while you've got the lump out. It's impossible to do without funky tools with the engine in situ. May as well do the thermostat while you're there too as it'll be welded in by its gasket...

If you could do us some pics as you progress that'd be awesome - there's very little documentation on these engines
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

the only mod i was planning on doing was just turning the boost up a couple of PSI but for the first year of the engine being in the car it is going to saty standard apart from a after market DV and a different intercooler to help save some spare as the stock ones i quite big to fit on a 306 with out having to do more work. the only other change i was plaining was to use a d turbo box rather then the 1.8 16v i have on the car already as ive heard there ment to be a good match but im going to have to do some hybrid clutch thing as well. im planing on doing some documentation of the conversion that will be done when the engines been swaped over.
