Inlet manifold (top half)
2.1TD 1998 (R - Reg)
hiya peeps.
just a quick one, i hope!
is the inlet manifold supposed to be having oil passing through it? just thought that all diesel took in was air.
only wondering as the rubber connecters (x4) that join the top half to the bottom half are leakin oil... and im wondering if that is the reason why im slowly loosing oil. and maby some power with any luck. also the inside of the manifold is thinck with oily gunk,
i suppose while im here... are their any ways in which i can locate any possible holes/gaps etc that might be causing me to loose boost pressure. becaus although she can seem fast, sometimes, i find myself sometimes battleing to case poxy little chavs in their over the top looking 1.1 fiesters. as obviosly you cant do a pressure test.... can you?
also i dont actually seem to get anywher untill im in 3rd or 4th gear. theirs no guts at all in 2nd, 30mph tops lol. is this right?
many thanks
dan

Re: Inlet manifold (top half)
i think EPiC does run a AFM, but if those O-rings are leaking oil as much as it sounds then you will be loosing a lot of boost here, also the intercoolers are known failure point

Re: Inlet manifold (top half)
thats a promise then, i can hear the turbo going for it, so im assuming thats fine, hopefully it is just the rubber O's.
when i get round to changin them, ill do it at college, and take advantage of their parafin/degreesing/oil remover stuff, and clean out the plastic inlet thingy.
if its not only them leaking oil.... where would it be leaking of the turbo..... if!!
many thanks

also... looking at haynes.... i dont have a m.a.s (mass airflow sensor) but i do have a m.a.p (manifold absolute pressure sensor).... would that be a problem, like your m.a.s supafrisk??
many thanks
many thanks

Re: Inlet manifold (top half)
Change the Os, they're not too expensive. Mine was full of oil too, I was a bit worried but I'm told the way the seals and bearings in the turbo work a certain amount of oil is inevitable, the problem comes when it starts leaving a vapour trail.

Re: Inlet manifold (top half)
changed em. for the 4 rubberz and the new clip for the turbo pipe.... nearly £30 flippin quid!!!
but on a good point, whilst i had the inlet manifold off, i found that a pipe was off the wastegate? connected to the servo. feels a bit better now anyhow, but im sure theirs a boost leak somewhere else. as the turbo dosnt really seem to give its all, untill im in 4th, then she pulls.
could the waste gate not be operating correctly? also what about the map sensor?? i know people seem to reacon changing the mass air flow meter helps, but mine dosn'e have one, so is the map - manifold absolute pressure sensor the same??
many thansk peeps

i suppose, but what car is cheap nowadays.
anyhow, back to the sensor thingy...m.a.p (manifold absolute pressure sensor)
could that have the same effect as when the m.a.s (mass airflow sensor) cocks up??
many thanks

The rubber O rings also went on mine many years ago... 13 quid for the parts. Didn't really affect the performance though and 2nd gear should pretty much catapult you to 30mph.

fair play. i just assumed it was naff. the speed that is. i guess im just expecting more outa her. swhe just seems to rev out to quick in the lower gears. but proberly just me,
what sorta speed should you be getting tops??
cheerz

These are absolute tops:nipper76 wrote:what sorta speed should you be getting tops??
1st gear - 10-15mph
2nd - 35mph
3rd - 70mph
4th - 95mph
5th - I did 120mph a few times with a following wind... on a private track of course (the M4 westbound)
