hi yogi have you changed the battery in your key ? if not try doing that.
when you have changed it stand close to your car then
1 press and hold in the large button until the little red light stops flashing
2 when you release the button the red light should be on all the time not flashing
3 now press the large button twice
4now put key into ignition turn it to on for at least 3 seconds then turn it off
now try it to see if it works .....

Sorry Yogi, totally went off at a tangent! As Puggy says try changing the battery in the plip for starters.
The lift pump may have gone faulty as you say.
It would be worth checking the fuel filter for any metal debris which would suggest the lift pump is shot; if it is you should replace it as the debris will foul and kill the high pressure pump!
Best of luck, have a search on hdi fuel pump in the engine sub-forum; there are a few posts on the subject. Look out for JamesLXDT's posts; he's the resident mechanic and genius!

Re: HOW DO I TELL A D8 FROM A D9hI ALL I HAVE BEEN CHECKING THE
Thanks puggy and teamster,
that certainly got the keyfob to lock and unlock the doors, but i still have the immobiliser symbol on.The car is turning over no ppbs and you can hear the pump kicking in when you turn on the ignition.
the battery was changed by the prev.owner last week might be worth while opening the key and making sure she has not lost the chip inside the keyfob,do they still have a chip in keyfob?if i remember correctly it looks like a piece of carbon, grey in colour, maybe she hasdropped it when reassembling the key.
is it possible for newbies to pm and i can maybe drop james xdt a message to see if he can help?
regards yogi

Re: HOW DO I TELL A D8 FROM A D9hI ALL I HAVE BEEN CHECKING THE
yes yogi they still have a chip in them so could be worth a look.
the other thing to look at would be the transponder around the ignition
switch ..

Re: HOW DO I TELL A D8 FROM A D9hI ALL I HAVE BEEN CHECKING THE
Could really do with James here ! not sure if the transponder is coded
to the ecu ,if not , you would need transponder ignition switch and key.
If the chip is missing from your key you could get another from main
stealers but cost about £130 and takes a couple of weeks

Re: HOW DO I TELL A D8 FROM A D9hI ALL I HAVE BEEN CHECKING THE
second thoughts if it isn't coded you would not need the ignition barrel
just transponder and plip cos you can take the key blade out of yours and
put it into the other plip ( getting confusing now

i have had the A.A out and they reckon its the key or transponder so i have got one lined up from local breaker i will ask him whats required as i know him and if it can come of donor vehicle fine and well i will give that a try and if not will check ecu and see if its the same as the one on mine, and take that as well.will try over the weekend and if not its back to the forums.
Once again thanks for the input it along with the other members has been second to none, and is appreciated.
