I'm going to put forward a motion that Top Gear ( a show I enjoy immensly ) are propogandists.
When promoting the 407, they tested the car with muddy tyres, and used no cool effects or any of that sort of thing that you would find on many of its reports on new cars. i.e the Golf GTI, the new mondeo ( even they had a concept in studio in anticipation of the mondeo's arrival )
This is the condition the 407 was in for the test
This photo demonstrates how Top Gear usually potray cars which they are predisposed to liking.
My point is this; Top Gear choose British cars before any others and this leads to biased judgement on a car which can result in disastrous sales for the manufacturer.
Example 1: Aston Martin vs. Ferrari - Clarkson had to concede the 360 was better than the vanquish S yet he still chose the Aston because "it is an Aston".
Example 2: Clarkson and Hammond both said the 407 was stylish, comfortable, good handling and well equipped but clarkson concluded by saying : "Ok. But its french so its going to break" I'd love him to see my Uncles D8 - its mint

Re: Conspiracy
Next you'll be saying they're taking bribes from the manufacturers!!
(I wouldn't be too surprised if they were)
I could level a similar charge at What (we love Fords) Car? magazine, no matter what the figures say they always pick the Ford. Unless the Ford's a real dog in which case it comes second.
Anyway, who gives a monkey's what Clarkson says?

That guy should be a president! He makes a lot of sense most of the time... And as much as I agree with Hammond/May on the 407, I also agree with Clarkson... as it WILL break. Older cars are much much more reliable. All the new electric gizmos will stop working especially with it being a French carsteve_earwig wrote:Anyway, who gives a monkey's what Clarkson says?

Re: Conspiracy
I don't recall them taking the Zafira - a car they often promote as being the best in its class - sideways round the racetrack to a techno soundtrack with associated visual effectseoin27 wrote:When promoting the 407, they tested the car with muddy tyres, and used no cool effects or any of that sort of thing that you would find on many of its reports on new cars. i.e the Golf GTI,
If they'd have given the diesel 407 the same kind of testing they'd have given a new Ferrari or Lamborghini you can be sure it would have been ridiculed from start to finish. Even if they'd have taken the 407 coupe up against other coupes, how do you think an executive FWD tourer would look trying to go sideways round a track next to the likes of an RX8?
Top Gear ain't a car review show - it's comedy. If you want reviews watch 5th Gear instead
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Re: Conspiracy
It is weird how Top Gear seem to *love* the Mondeo when all I can say of my experience of Fords is that they are NOT built for the long-haul. 50,000 miles is about your lot before the gear change, steering, brakes, engine, all go on holiday...and not to mention the Fords now reoccuring rust problems
I've always understood Fords to be built to an absolute premium cost with the cheapest competitive parts etc all packaged up in a clever marketing and pricing deal to make us buy them
It's a bit unfair to keep slating french electreeks when people like Mercedes seem 10 times worse of late
The French have world-class engineers in many sectors and would put the brits to shame in many areas - at least they still actually have a car industry eh!

Re: Conspiracy
Hm yes, I see what you mean about Fords. I test drove the 2.2 TDCi on an 05 plate last week and it was RUBBISH. Pretty punchy engine, but that comes from Peugeot-Citroen Group
And the rest of it was just SO BORING, there was NOTHING in there to make me interested in it... Well, the Sony stereo was OK but other than that... ... yawn

Re: Conspiracy
Actually I think you'll find it's Renault letting the side down there. Their cars really don't go along with any definition of "build quality" you could come up with. A third of the faults with them are due to poor wiring, another third are due to water ingress hitting electricals, and the remaining third is because they didn't bother putting something together properly... like the engine...Welton wrote:It's a bit unfair to keep slating french electreeks when people like Mercedes seem 10 times worse of late![]()

To be fair, top gear is not a motoring show. Its a comedy based around motoring.
They give almost no genuinely useful information and are blatantly bias and over-opinionated. But i still love them, not for their info but for their pure entertainment value.

Top Gear is not about the cars.
Its about tuning in each week to find out what 3 middle aged blokes have gotten up to.
Comedy and ingenuity genious.
