hiya peeps.

just trying to solve a few probs with my motor. - - - 2.1TD (98)

think ive got to replace the head cover gasket, as im leakin oil... and it dosnt look as if a gasket exsists anymore. ( would that mean lack of power )

but why would i smell a eggy smell from my car?

and no.... not a fart! its not constant, well i havent noticed it much, but others do.

what could this be comming from?

Is it the rocker cover gasket or the head gasket, a head gasket would be consistant with lack of power and could leak oil and is generally an expensive job. Rocker cover would not imho cause a lack of power and is simpler job and you could do it youself........at least it is on my V6.

The eggy smell is most likely coming from your cat converter on the exhaust, it may be collapsing and partially blocking the exhaust. This in turn would cause extra back pressure on the engine that might cause probs. Try www.onlineautomotive.com who seem to be cheap on exhausts.

i thought about the cat, but wasnt sure is diesels produced the same smells as petrol.

Yep diesel will give the same smell as petrol and a blocked cat would give you a reduction in power

Not had any experience with the Pug diesel unit but i would imagine that the rocker cover would come off with a few bolts slap a new gasket in and bobs your fathers brother!..........prob just forgot to mention the 1000's of niggly bits you've got to remove to get at the rocker!!

I have done the rocker/ top manifold cover on my 2.1 td....

You will need a replacement clamp the matches up the exhaust gas recycle pipe to the top manifold (if it hasnt been previously changed to one that looks similar to a jubilee clamp).
The top manifold gasket itself is made of rubber and quite fiddly to fit as the bugger tends to try pop out of its seating if theres any oil about... so make sure you try clean the manifold as best you can to save a half hours fun getting it back into position.
The top manifold attaches to the lower manifold using 4 large reinforced rubber "o rings". its worth replacing these as they need to be a good fit to be gas tight and so prevent loss of boost. Theyre not a lot of money to get even from the main stealers
You just need to allow a few hours to do the job as its quite fiddly to get the manifold lined up properly with the above mentioned rings and the gasket itself correctly positioned ...failing to do so will give you an oil leak around the back of the cover and also a nice drop in boost pressure too

That's very true, also may be worth getting the battery hooked up to an optimate to desulphate it.

just got to get the gasket £20 inc vat
should be a fun little job lol

whats optimate?? and i do run my stero + amp a lot of the time, so the battery wouldnt be overcharge would it?

the blocked cat sounds good..... i think ill go for that, could proberly do with changing anyway. thata proberly rob my wallet

A blocked CAT would hamper performance and on a diesel would smell like a coal burning stove IMO

See, the trouble with trying to diagnose a fault at a distance is we have to try and guess just what you're experiencing. So, this eggy smell, is it the battery? Is it the cat? Or is it a dead traffic warden decomposing in your boot? An Optimate is a breed of battery charger/conditioner. The suggestion is maybe there's a fault with your charging system, I'm not sure what the point of conditioning a possibly fried battery is tho, and you probably won't be able to see if it's dry (although failure to crank the engine is always an indication). Do you possess a multimeter with which you can check the voltage across battery? You'll need to do it when the car's off, with it idling and when it's revving. Anything above 14.5v could be a problem...
