I've got to replace the bottom hose, it's pissing out a goodun' :(

Been out lunchtime - NO, not sorted.

Now got new o-ring, reused the old one, got PTFE (Plumbers tape) as a standby/secondary measure.
Leak nowhere near as bad as it was so i am heading in the right direction.

Will hopefully sort it tonight...

Bottom hose eh, the bottom hose on the 2.1 is just shy of £ 60.00 according to my local stealership!
It is a 'vision' in plastic and metal...and fecking expensive - it is a water hose on a car FFS!

Looks like a b1tch to fit as well for those without car ramps.

Right then, just cleaned up and it is still leaking, run out of light and energy and have an interesting and painful collection of cuts on both hands

Plan B
Blue hylomar to seal, it is the surface of the hose fitting that is corroded and uneven I think the socket has a little wear in it from the corrosion and i am sure that this is the problem and why it is leaking.

Have a look at

torn between the Hylomar Blue and the Hermetite instant gasket or a combo of them. Hermetite red is pretty much the same as Hylomar blue (from memory and bike enduro days)

Any thoughts???

Let me know if it works Habbers. I did manage to get the bottom hose out; it was rusted solid into the rad which I had to replace so I had to get a new conrad union and splice it to the bottom hose. And it was a pig to get out :frown:

The Hylomar Universal Blue and the Hermetite instant gasket are both non-setting, I'm not sure you want that 'cos there'll be a fair bit of pressure.

How about Loctite Gasket Seal 5699 300ml? - "Recommended for sealing all types of flanges including stamped sheet metal where water glycol resistance is required." I.e. core plugs.

I've bitten the bullet and ordered a new hose; my wife's off to her folks at the weekend cos I'm working and I don't want it overheating on her. £45!
What happenned to the good ol' days of a length of hose and jubilee clips? Rotten bastards.

UPDATE
Horrah!

Fixed.
I wish i had taken piccies but hidesight is a wonderful thing.

I had a concern that the flange on the rad which takes the hose had a crack in it, it has groove/split partly as you look down on it which looks like it should be there however it appeared to continue a bit and to where i think the o-ring seat and this is why it was leaking. I could be wrong but it felt that way as it is difficult to see without removing the rad which i did not want to do unless it was fecked.

In the end i got the Hermetite instant gasket + and this is the important bit for me flange - a stick of instant plastic repair, both bought from Halfrauds as it was close to home and when you have a seriously leaky rad it counts. The instant plastic stuff It is a bicolour stick around 4 inches long and 1/2 inch widethat you rub together in your hands to activate. You mould it into the desired shape and leave it for 20 m shape. It is chemical, water heat and cold resistant and this was what i used ins and it sets hard. I thought that this might just be the job to reinforce and seal the flange by rolling it into a long 'worm' and wrapping it around the flange and moulding it onto it, to seal it and strengthen it.

Prior to repairs i drained the colloiing system and thoroughly cleaned all the surfaces and roughted up the plastic flange exterior with emery to give a good key.

I have done some 30 miles of hard driving and stop start since fixing and not a single drip so far

conclusions are that the instant gasket will seal a rough and worn conrad joint (suggest you sttill use an o ring) if that all is wrong. the instant plastic seems to work a treat on damaged/broken plasitcs as long as they are no0t too far gone.

Will report back after a week/600 miles or so.

thanks for all your help,

Paul

I fitted a new bottom hose today, so far so good!
Actually I got on a bit of a roll, changed the plugs and air filter too!
Whoever had the plugs out last must have used a 10ft breaker bar to tighten them up, I thought I was going to shear them all off undoing them!
