@ Steve - did that, err, thing pictured crash like that - and you were in it? :?

These lists also read as the rise and fall in our personal cicumstances at the time - single, married, kids, skint, etc. :| it's probably fair to say that we own the best cars in our single days :( my car now is probably 'worse' in value terms than my car I had at 19 years old

Yep, I was in it. That "thing" was 1979 Marina, a truly terrible car, then what do you expect from a Morris Minor with a bodyshell designed over drinks one afternoon?

Anyway, it's hard to make out in the pics 'cos the back half's behind the front half. This was the days before compulsory seat belts so I wasn't wearing one, which was lucky because most of the seat belt mountings went with the back half.

How the hell did you survive that?

My Dad had a Marina 1300 on a 'K' plate, I can still remember the screaming engine noise when he used to take it on the motorway   in fact you used to be able to smell if a Marina was up ahead as the rings were allways worn

I also remember it has a 'secret' red button on the starter motor? to start the engine when working under the bonnet :)

Buggered if I know.

Ah, in the days before pre-engaged starters the solenoid used to be somewhere else under the bonnet and on earlier cars this also featured a button you could press to manually close the contacts. Very useful, particularly if you're trying to steal it. I can't ever remember seeing a red one tho :?
