Hello, need some advice

Post by Zippokovich »

hello, I'm new.

I have an 11 year old 1.4 Pug 306 Style, witch someone recently ran into the back of and its been written off. So i need a new car and i've fallen in love with the 406.

What i really want to know is what i should and can get for my money. My max budget is £2000 but i'm looking more at about £1500 or there abouts (buying form garages). I can only get a 1.8 petrol or up to a 2.1l diesel as I'm 18 and wont get a quote for anything else. I'm looking for a saloon, but what age/mileage can i expect to get? And is it worth getting an older executive 2l diesel or a younger 1.8l petrol LX/Rapier?

P.S. Whats the difference between the LX and the Rapier?

Hi,

LX is the "standard" sort of spec level, rapier is a fairly high end spec level (only on D9/facelift models).

Never driven either but i believe the 1.8 is slow and not brilliant on fuel. the 2.1 isn 't too bad (and can be made quicker), probably does low to mid 40's. Personally of the two i be looking for the 2.1, wouldn't worry about mileage (but nothing to silly unless its very cheap) as long as there is good history.

I think the spec levels rough go something like L, LX, GLX, GTX, Rapier, Executive (this been the highest and more toys than you can remember)

£2000, or even £1500 would buy you a lot of 406 these days. And there are plenty about so loads to choose from. 8)

hmm, there are loads about but i have quite specific requirements (with the engine and such) and i live in Scotland and have been recommended to buy from dealers only.

Also dose it go (from worse to best): LS, L, S, LX, SX, LX-S, Rapier, SRi, GTX, GLX, SE, Executive or is it as mbell666 said above?

it depends on what age car you are looking at, generally lx-s (possibly SX also) is only available on d8's.

GTX, Rapier are D9 only (also have LX, GLX, executive)

S/SE are late d9 only, generally S=LX, SE will probably be executive or at least rapier spec level.

What toy you get in each spec level also changes with age, generally the later the car the more toys it will have at a lower spec level. e.g a late LX probably has the same (or more) toys than a early GLX. So it is very hard to put them in a definitive order of worst to best.

At the end of the day you need to decide what "toys" you need and what spec/age car you need for them. If all else fails just buy an executive or SE, then you will have more toys than you know what to do with!

I'd go for the diesel too - was in a 2.1 taxi not that long ago with 150k on it. sounded as sweet as a nut and pulled like a freight train. I haven't been in a 1.8 but i don't think it would compare imo. The torque of the 2.1 would make it a very relaxing motor to drive - i.e. no need to rev the nuts off it = reasonable fue economy.
Think about the road tax too mate - in 2010 the tax will be: -
1.8 Petrol - Pre 1/3/01 £200 - post 1/3/01 £270
2.0 hdi - Pre 1/3/01 £200 - post 1/3/01 £125 :cheesy:
2.1 td - pre 1/3/01 £200 = i think they didn't make these after about 98
Anyway have a look at Parkers tax calculator thingy http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/road-tax/
Good luck whatever you buy. Welcome to the club.
