406 Hdi - can't remove rear pads, or calipers!

Post by logicred »

Rear disks and handbrake pads are shot on my Pug 406 Hdi 110. Trouble is, pins holding the pads in a completely seized (even after carefully placed penetration fluid!). I have new pads (ad pins), disks and new handbrake pads too. Questions:

1. Is there some kind of extra fitting kit for the handbrake shoes? My concern is that I will fit my shiny shoes but everything else inside the drum will be shot or seized.
2. If I end up taking the caliper off completely, do I simply remove the brake line going into it? I assume I will then have to bleed the brakes afterwards?

Thanks

1. The hand brake shoes fit like normal drum shoes, under the rear disks. There is an manual adjuster on them you will want to un-adjust to remove the disk.

2. Have you tried a punch and hammer? (you did remove the clips holding the pins in)

If you still can get them out you could drill them and put new pins in. You may want to fit new ones anyway (with plenty of copper slip)

You can remove the brake pipe on the rear of the caliper, you will need to bleed the brakes. When i tried this on mine the joint was seized so ended up splitting it further up where it joins with the flexi hose.

Woah there big guy! They'd need to be drilled 100% accurately or the callipers could be buggered. If they really are that siezed you'd be better off taking them off the car and sticking them in a vice to have a proper go at them. If you're using an old nail of something to try punching them out it's time to invest in a proper set of parrallel pin punches.

It's the usual plastic sheet under the reservoir cap to minimise loss, use a proper brake line spanner to disconnect the brake line. I'd advise you to get an Eezibleed to do the dirty but remember DOT4 is very effective paint stripper.

The alternative is an open spanner, which can do a grand job of rounding the things off [/voice of experience]. I can't actually remember the size needed but I seem to remember my spanner is 13mm one end and presumably 11 on the other.

I've never done a brake line on a car, only my bike. It's worth having for the money!

I've seen they brake line spanners before, they basically a hex spanner with a cut out so you can slide them over the brake pipes. Given i rounded mine with a normal spanner there probably worth buying.

I think the union's are fairly small 8/9/10mm. but can't remember for sure.
