We have to pay Income tax and National Insurance (this is where we brits pay into a free health service for foreigners to use and a tiny state pension worth next to f*ck all when we retire after years of slogging away).
The trouble with "average" earnings here is that it takes into account the so called Fat Cat's who gross Millions a year and your low paid workers all in one handy figure
Yeah the tax system is around the same. We have a 9% annual employer contribution to superannuation so you earn say $56k and then the employer pays another 9% of earnings into a superannuation fund which you cant touch until formal retirement or when you hit 55/60 - not 100% sure! Health is included in or taxes but if you earn over a certain amount you have to pay a contribution...
Living standards are high here but so is the cost of living - Sydneysiders find Sydney expensive!

I can't see how this sort of thing's going to go on, it must be having a serious affect on the cost of living so people are going to need a pay rise, which would have serious detrimental effects on inflation and the economy. So what are the priminister and the chancellor doing about it?
Gordon Brown has called for modern crime-fighting measures to be embraced and adapted to fit with the principles of individual freedom and liberty.
So Gordon's trying to make it even harder to do anything about it, I can't find what the chancellor's up to today though, perhaps he's on his hols.
I think Gordy Boy has quite happily taken up Blair's quest to slowly dismantle the British way of life and tax us to oblivion.
