strong fumes from engine bay of 1998 2l stdt 406

Post by andrepug »

There are strong fumes from the engine bay even when car is cold and first starts. Not noticeable when car is moving but present again when car stops.
Does not seem to be an oil leak so it must be exhaust fumes coming from somewhere. Any ideas?
Also engine resonates through cabin at about 1100 revs. Again, any ideas?
Thanks

What engine? The resonation could be the exhaust blowing, try blocking the exhaust with a rag (don't rev it), a leak should become more apparent.

It's a 2 litre XUD11 BTE non HDI engine with the epic pump (not leaking) and the injectors have recently been serviced. Car has done 170,000 kms.

If you've got fumes in the engine bay the header pipe clamp on the manifold may be loose; you can buy a replacement kit pretty cheaply. It's a wierd system, you've got a clamp which goes over the header pipe and the fixing bolts go through springs which keep it all under tension; these were squashed on my last 406 so I spaced it all out with a load of washers which worked as a cheap fix. You need double jointed arms though and lots of WD40

Another alternative, but it could be from a leak on the EGR valve (if fitted). If it's exhaust gases you should see (if you can) soot around the joints but not see the smoke due to pressure. If it's the header you might see smoke around that area. If it's injectors there is a possibility of some liquid (I doubt it due to the amount of pressure) and a diesel smell.

The best way is to distinguish the smell of each and hope it is only one and not two leaks. Smell the diesel first from the cap, then smell the oil from the cap, then see if the smell is different. If it is different from the diesel or oil it will likely be exhaust gases.

I have a little knowledge of the XUD but not the XUD11.

Hope it helps.
