New valves? But there's 20 of them  and don't forget the followers! How much is a 2nd hand lump???

Sadly, it does look very clean and sludge-free in there, or is that just the pics?

i know, lapping 20 valves will take some time, but it wont cost that much, approx: valves £5 each x 20= £100 cam followers £10 each x 20= £200 valve stem seals £2 each x 20= £40
all in = £340 then theres also a head gasket set, head bolts, etc....

i may just change the buggerd valves, and flog the car to some poor bugger

Oh crap. I suppose there's two things you can do: fix it properly and drive it around 'til you save up enough for the gti6
-or-
Fix it quickly, good enough to last a couple of thousand miles, flog it and buy something to run about in until you've saved up enough for the gti6.

I suppose if all 20 valves are sproinked then you'll have to fix it properly, other than that it's down to what you find as you strip it and what you can re-use with a nice big blob of Hylomar. Do you really need to renew the head bolts? Are the followers really knackered? Don't let your conscience be your guide...
