Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Cruise control d9 1999 hdi110 **pls help!!!**

Post by wasp »

Hi
I Have a 1999 (last centuries model!) pug 406hdi glx est.i purchased cruise control parts secondhand .heres the story:
1. fitted on/off switch ( simply removed a blanking plug to the right of the steering columb, next to the headlight up/down knob thingy, it plugged straight into a connector block behind blanking plug)
2. started engine, pressed new on/off switch, it lights up, press it again ,light goes out.
3.removed steering columb shroud. lower shroud has 3 fixing mounts for cruise lever/stalk-perfect, and a cut out mark to form hole for stalk. hole cut out, rubber gromet which came with lever fitted , stalk fitted perfectly...just like a bought one!
4. wires and connecter block from stalk...after looking for a while i found the connector plug (in existing loom) further down the steering columb. plugged wire in ..perfect..
5. cruise doesnt work ... so i take it to local pug garage.they connect it to their computer to try and enable in in the bsi/ecu but the option doesnt appear :( other things appear like trip computer, electric seats etc which were not fitted from new , but not cruise /c ....

After some research on the net i found a citreon hdi forum post , saying the option for cruise was being removed automaticaly from the bsi everytime it was hooked up to the citreon main dealer computer to stop owners fitting cruise retrospectively (because they charge a fortune for it as a new option ) and im wondering if thats the case with mine OR AM I OVERLOOKING SOMETHING ELSE?.
it seems odd that all the wiring is in situ and apparently active.. but it wont work!
PLEASE HELP ME, i wanna get this working , am i missing something ie control module?
the wiring system IS NOT MULTIPLEX . NOR WAS THE SECOND HAND STALK N SWITCH I BOUGHT IT CAME FROM A 2000 MODEL HDI 406.

they may have written it out of the software for that BSi, as alot of people with 307's first discoverd this, cruise control was a £170 option when new, but could be retrofitted for £70, but it wasnt an approved retro-fit for safety reasons, so peugeot clocked onto what was happening removed the option on every software update, luckly when i had my HDi it never had any software updates so i had no trouble doing this

Unless you forgot to write about them, you haven't fitted any of the cruise control ECU, the pump/valve or the actuator. You need to check/fit the extra 2 pedal switches too (one on the clutch, one on the brake pedal in addition to the existing switch for the brake light)

none of that is needed on a HDi mjb, the cruise is entireley controlled by the engine ecu, as theres no throttle to hold open, the ecu looks at the road speed you set it to and compares it with rpm Vs. load, and then maintains the same rail pressure and injection duration and angle, with only slight deviations of these to maintain the speed, though the ecu doesnt monitor road speed it only monitors the rpm once the cruise is set

RPM control, interesting.

On the petrol knocking it out of gear gets a redline, I guess the diesel will just sit there at the same RPM!
Remember - it only takes a few inches of water to drown a 406 don't make the same mistake I made! The V6 Exec is no more.

I always wondered why they didn't run the cruise control off the engine rpm, rather than road speed because there'd be no problems hitting resume in the wrong gear or anything but then I suppose it's all geared up (ha!) for automatic transmissions.

RPM control - resuming in a higher gear -> not good!!

Speed Control - resuming in a lower gear -> not good!!

EIther way there is an issue.

When would you want to set the cruise control in 4th? I suppose it could happen, dual carriageway, insane 30mph speed limit, no other cars on the road...

No throttle? What does the cable go to then? Wouldn't you just put the throttle pot on the pedal and be done with it?

RE: bsi software being deleted by pug stealers, perhaps another bsi (second hand) would help from a car with cruise? i dont know how easy this would be to install? or can the original be reprogramed ? i dont want to give up (yet!!).
Also retro fitting fuel computer to d9 is it just the stalk i need? i want to see my mpg , or the way fuel prices are going it would need to read gpm ( GALLONS PER MILE !!)  Thanks again.

i managed to do this on my 99 110. i fitted the stalk and i got the range computer come up but no values in it. i changed the setting in the bsi to show fuel comp active and it works a treat.
