Oh noes - a tyre choice thread!

I suppose we all have our own prefs with tyres but I wanted to ask anyway:

My current Michelin Energy E3A's have nearly had every last mile scrubbed off them so I'm up for 2 new fronts.

Size = 195 x 65 x 15H

I am thinking about:

Yokahoma C Drives
Continental Premium Contact
Michelin Energy Saver (20% less rolling resistance)
Michelin Energy E3A's (again).

I was looking at ordering from Mytyres or blackcircles and getting them fitted at my friendly tyre place. Currently the prices are between £50 and £60 each for all the above.

Low noise is a must as is comfort and fuel economy. I've got Goodyear NCT5's on the back and the test reports on these is not too good (*wonders about recent rear handling woes*).

Any other recommendations?

I used the latest Michelin tyres with good results. Okay, grip is not the absolute best in the wet, but if you think about it Britain is actually dry more often than we think, we just have more cloudy, dull days than most. Grip in the dry is pretty good, break off point is progressive and not sudden. They also last, and last (about twice as long as the Contys contact version) - good high milage value

To be fair my Miche's have been on there for 2.5yrs and 19000 miles and they were'nt exactly brand new when I bought the car! and I do throw it about from time to time.

I think the Miches have a hard compoud (not good in the wet) but last for ages. I have had softer tyres on other cars like the Yokies and such but they do wear quicker :|

One up for the Michelins so far then :cheesy:

I wish you could go to a web site like that an type in your car for it to produce a choice of the top 3 tyres for that model :wink: ..... I've just read a report on my choice of a Yokahoma tyre fitted to an Alfa Romeo - all well and good but put that tyre on a 406 and.... :|

Those Goodyear Wranglers seem ok, I just don't seem to be able to find any to fit my scooterImage

You can't even put "Peugeot 406" in a search, would be very useful.

I'm probably committing sacrilege here but I've just got cheap old Coopers on mine for what little mileage it does :oops:

I have C-Drives on my 406!

They cost me 120 AUD per corner and I've been happy with them. Very grippy in the dry and awesome in the wet! They are a softer compound though and as a result of this, you won't get the same mileage as a Michies will get!

NCT5's are a rubbish tyre!

I'm a bit bothered now about putting new super grip boots on the front with NCT's on the back (rear end action) :?

Maybe I'll just go for the same Miche's again as it was allways ok on them before :|

I feel like putting 4 tyres on but it's hard to justify replacing rear tyres which still have 8mm of tread on them :|

Anyone else heard that you're better off putting the best gripping tyres on the rear axle?

Nope, always better on the front, apparently :| I suppose it's where you do most of your braking.

Put the tyres you want on the front, you'll just have to suffer the old ones on the back 'til they're time is up.

Perfect solution - rip a couple of burnouts with the old NCT5's and get 4 new tyres :)

I got falken 452's all round ,good grip in dry especially if warm but
bit dodgy in wet when cold and they also seem to follow ruts or ridges in
the road, been ok but wouldn't use again .
.. ooh are those drugs for me Matron

It's actually more important to put the best gripping tyres on the back :cheesy:
