Always turning left

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Always turning left

Post by Pug1 »

Hi
I have a T reg 406 estate, the indicator switches onto left turn by its self.
I have bought a replacement stalk, but can't seem to get access to the screws that hold the stalk in place!
Any ideas welcome please.

Sounds like a D9, apparently you have to take the steering wheel off :(

You sure? Access to the indicator stalk is pretty easy... Just take the steering wheel shroud off then there's a pair of little torx screws holding the stalk in place
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Isn't the breaking thing a D9 speciality? T reg makes it a '99, right on the cusp... I've got some issues with the one on my D9 (blip, plop....plip....silence :frown: ) and I had the cowling off, only to find something that didn't look very user-friendly.

Thanks for your help.
The torx screws that hold in the stalk are facing the steering wheel limiting access.
I think it might be a garage job :(

Thanks

I had this with mine (99 d9), had to change the stalk (£40 ish for new one, none com2000). there are some torx screws that hold the surround on the column in the bottom but these are along way up a hole, remove these, then there are more torx on the front that hold the stalk in, but you can access these easily.

fairly straight forward job, i manged in about 20/30 mins with basic tools

Maybe, you could take the steering wheel off but I'm not keen on the airbag issues. I'll have to do it myself 'cos if I take it somewhere they won't want to fanny about dismantling it and cleaning contacts :frown:

Hmm, why am I dreading this job? Oh yes, I remember

Hey you guys, is there any way to dismantle the switch while it's in place? (pretty please with a cherry on top and spam)

Which bit anyway? The half-dismantled Senator, the steering wheel, the rope, the trolley jack handle, the club hammer, the racking, the block of wood or the hedge?

or did you spot the Martian invasion fleet reflected in the rear view mirror? :P

Of course! I'd tried everything else and I was worrying I was going to muck up the thread on the steering column. A few twists on the rope, a sharp tap on the nut and bingo! 8)
