Speakers Popping
Had this popping noise in the car since i purchased it 2 years ago.
When starting the vehicle (usually cold) after about 30s the front speaker will make a really loud popping sound (gun shot)
i can sometimes get the stereo to make the noise by changing the source from CD changer to Radio, and sometimes it happens
when i go over pot holes or uneven road.
I have put it down to a few things, the stereo needs re-earthing, the multichanger cable is loose somewhere in the system?
is this common? or should i take it to my local audio shop (good friends with owner as spent many £££££ with them on my last car)
This is the standard Upgraded 406 exec system, nothing changed.

Re: Speakers Popping
This is another problem that's known to the 406 community, not really common but it has certainly been on here before. IIRC it was a dodgy earth on the head unit.

Re: Speakers Popping
Mine does this and I can honestly say it's the only time I have genuinely been frightened/shocked
Mahoosive bang
Where the multi-pin plug goes in the back of the head unit the PCB inside the head unit has dry joints which creates the banging. I have tried supporting the loom/plug so it doesn't flap about and it works (a bit).
I think the proper cure is over on the Coupe forum.

Re: Speakers Popping
As Welton says it a connection problem on the rear on the head unit. i've tried various thing and not fixed it, i've glue gunned the wires into the connector to stop them moving, glue gunned around the connector on the radio to stop that moving, it still does it.
If you play with it too much you make the radio crackle as well, I just need a snap to complete the set!
next plan is to re-solder the joints at the rear of the head unit, but its on my list of stuff to do at some point (normally no point).

Tell me about it. I've got so much work to do to the car it's unreal. I've been allowed this weekend as I told her "if I don't replace the cambelt and it snaps we will be f*cked".mbell666 wrote:Now i've split up with the bird its gone up dramatically, was probably round 10% before! Re: Speakers Popping
I have visted my local audio shop and he believes it is the head unit, he didnt believe that peugeot did a JBL speaker upgrade on the 406? he said it would be better to pull the HU out and see if its an amplified system or HU powered system. what keys do i need to remove the HU?
also the fabric in the passenger footwell has come loose (below glovebox) and needs replacing, i have noticed what looks like the car alarm situated there? is that what it is or could it be the amplifier?
any help greatly appreciated

Re: Speakers Popping
That soundproofing is horrible. I don't know how it was ever designed to stay up there! I've got some self-adhesive velcro strips on mine now.crazycamp wrote:also the fabric in the passenger footwell has come loose (below glovebox) and needs replacing, i have noticed what looks like the car alarm situated there? is that what it is or could it be the amplifier?
As for the alarm looking thing under there, chances are it's the speaker from a nokia car kit. They seem quite popular - you can probably remove a load of crap relating to it too, like aerial, mic and control box. I believe (I don't have one) the JBL amp is under a front seat on some models and under the parcel shelf on others (saloons only)
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
Re: Speakers Popping
in mine teh jbl amp is in the boot the opposite side to the cd changer (i.e driver side). if you remove the linning you should be able to see a silver (?) metal case in frame. thats the amp.

Re: Speakers Popping
Yes the amp is in the boot right hand side behind the liner.
I think the JBL amp system and speakers are good. Can't you just get the HU repaired?
Ha ha - that floppy fluffy sound mat thing is a pain. Every time I look at it it's come out of that white plastic 'gripper' clip thing.
mjb - the velcro idea is a good one!

I've actually found a "solid" one at the scrappers, which is more like a cardboard thing covered in carpet. Sat very snuggly in there before I sold the car.Welton wrote:Ha ha - that floppy fluffy sound mat thing is a pain. Every time I look at it it's come out of that white plastic 'gripper' clip thing.
