Fail :(

Post by mjb »

I think I caught the MOT tester on a bad day :(

1. Offside front tyre tread depth below requirements of 1.4mm
2. Offside front tyre tread depth below requirements of 1.4mm

(these had about 4mm of tread on the treaded bit, but despite being pumped to 37psi they were worn at the edges as if I'd been driving on a pair of flats)

3. Offside steering rack gaiter split
4. Offside front constant velocity joint gaiter split

(arse)

5. Offside front brake disc excessively pitted

(like hell is it)

6. Nearside rear direction indicator incorrect color

(it's orange, but it wasn't orange enough!)

Also an advisory about the rear discs, but I was planning to replace them next month anyway

Crap. Crap. Crap. I've left the car with them as the boss was a really nice guy and seemed like he wouldn't rip me off. He reckons £200 to fix, but he's going to price it up for me. Hope to hell I get it back tomorrow else I'm not going to Farnborough :(

Arse.

Sounds like a bad day'er to me :frown:

Only thing there really should be the gaitors, the rest should be advisory's IMO :frown:

Oo - oo mister your orange bulb isn't "orangey" enough

Good luck with the repairs and sorry it didn't fly through - hey at least the egg sauce is ok? :|

If there's enough meat left maybe the disk could be skimmed, then again seeing as how both disks would have to be changed, is it time for something better?

I could live with the gaiters - I know I didn't check them and I know I can't change them myself, but the other things have put me in a right bad mood, especially the tyres. They're f*cking FINE. It also means I'm going to have to spend a load on a pair of cheapass tyres now then get another (decent) pair in a fortnight when I get paid, and be bloody careful as I'll be driving on ditchfinders in the meantime. The rears have about 20,000 left in them too, so I'm going to end up just throwing the buggers. The disc? Pitted a couple of mill tops. Hardly "excessive"! And the bulb?!?! Looks f*cking orange to me! Was the tester f*cking colourblind or something?

Not happy :(

Even if the exhaust was blowing (this w**ker would have probably added a failure for a slight speck of surface rust) it's £5.49 for a patch from Halfords. At least it'd be cheap, unlike a pair of f*cking tyres and discs

Actually section 1.1.5 deals with number plate lights and the checks are:
www.ukmot.com wrote:5. With the side and rear lamps switched on, check that the rear registration plate lamp(s) is
a. fitted
b. working, and
c. does not flicker when tapped lightly by hand.
Sure the coppers would have something to say about bright pink LEDs or something though

Skimming the discs are a waste of time in the 406 - I had it done and they were only good for another 12,000km! The braking performance was no where near as good and they still ended up warping after a while! The metal in the OEM discs is pretty soft anyways!

Much better to shell out the extra cash and get it done - the labour charge is still going to be the same as the mechanic has to take the discs off the car!

The idea is to get the thing past the MOT then replace the discs with decent ones of my choice shortly after when I've got some money (I've been planning to do the rears soon, and the fronts are a piece of cake in comparison). Besides I guess it'd be more down to the thickness/hardness of the discs than anything else

Bastards started the work without checking first, which means shortcuts weren't taken and I'm now paying for budget brake discs and tyres I'll have to replace asap :(

The worst thing is it seems the V6 has a bigger driveshaft than the other models and as such they can't get their hands on a cv boot that fits. The stealer's saying Tuesday, which means I'm going to be without a car this weekend and unable to make it down to Farnborough. Arse.

The V6 with recent cambelt and split cv boot that replaced the tubby with on-its-last-legs cambelt, split cv boot and missing bonnet. Still think I got a good deal :)

Apart from the boot...

If you're coming up this way, hell yes! I'm at ST5 5NH (between J15 and J16) at the moment but I may be able to borrow someone's car and nip out to somewhere more convenient for an hour...

Sorry for the slow reply - been busy at work this morning :(

Phoned up the garage and they've managed to find one. Apparently the car should be tested and ready for collection later this afternoon (thank god!). Really appreciate the offer though supa - thanks, you're a star :)
