I wonder if it's had a cambelt change and they've forgot to time the thing up properly?

The gearbox mount has been known to give gear-selection issues, would be worth a looky.

I've done plenty of cambelts on XUD diesels, but they've all been in 306's, however I've never known it to be necessary to use that 'adjuster' or whatever it is supposed to be. It seems to be really sluggish compared to a 306, although I am aware it probably weighs about 200kg more, but it still seems to not have much in it. having said that the boost compensator pipe that goes from the valve on top of the pump to the intercooler pipe was knackered and possibly leaking (looked like it had a tear at either end, not enough to definately say it was leaking, but enough to make me think it would have a detrimental effect.

i've have a look at mounts, linkages etc in a bit. its strange because every other gear is fine on it. hmm

the linkage for 3rd/4th gear seems like its seen better days, theres quite a bit of play in it. what are the usual signs of excessive wear?

"usual"? There aren't any! I can't recall anyone ever having a problem with a manual other than the usual reverse/1st synchro issue

Fair enough, I just thought there might be some signs that indicate worn linkages, i.e. excessive play in the joints

On high milers the gearbox mount can make it difficult to engage but as mjb said it's one of the few things we ever worry about here - in fact no-one ever changes the gearbox oil either
