my head gasket and timingbelt change.

right chaps, as you may or may not know, my head gasked has blown. so as i cannot afford the £800+ for the garage to repair it, im gonna do it myself. and the timing belt while im down there, so to speak.

Im pretty ok ish about this, as im fairly compitent, and enjoy a challenge. so my 110 2lt hdi is not in athousand bits.! i was just waiting to get my haynes manual fo confirm the timing belt locking proseedure, and torque settings for ron (later-ron), and i thougt id better have my green book on hand for justin (just in case). so.... now i have read it im shittttin myself. They dont half make it sound hard. i know im attemting two 4 spanner procedeurs here and a few 2 and 3 spanner dubry. but . hey..

Right a few serious questions for our resident mechs . (james springs to mind)
According to haynes, the timing belt cannot be tentioned without some fancy electronic gizmo iy thingy, that talks about seems. is this true? or is the old 5mm movement fine.
Next, haynes say that if i disconect any high pressure fuel line, that i need to replace it with a new one. i havent dissconected ant yet, as im waiting for my safly goggles, safley gloves, safty boots, saftey hat, saftey manual, fire extiquisher, and all the other safety stuff they think you need to handle diesel. so is this true?

any help and advice is very much appreciated on this or any other topic related matter. i will continue on here as i progress and make it a sort of blog.

I've read the SEEM thing isn't absolutely necessary but...
A thread about this very subject. More on Honest John. The 1/4 turn thing seems general but I really did read somewhere it wasn't so good. Anyone done this? I tried a search, Draper do a tool but it's a bit pricey and I can't find out what units it uses but it's probably Newtons (try and find a conversion table ), everyone else says 1/4 turn...

Haynes says the fuel system should depressurize after 30 seconds. I think I'd leave it for 24 hours, just to be safe

Anyway, just work your way through it and come on here for advice, moral support & sympathy

Thanks for that, some intresting reads there. i will be forgeting about the seemstress. I understand anbout leaving the fuel preassure to drop, but whats all this guff about replacing all pipes?? is it just precaustion?

im going to be getting the head scimmed and preassure tested. is it the norm to strip the head down before it gos to the engineeers or will they need to do it. i cant think why they would, but it would be easier for me

Right, its all back together, and appears to be working good.
but i now have a whirring noise from the timing belt area, on low acceleration. could this be the belt too tight or too loose?
ant suggestions would be heplfull chaps, thanks.

What sort of nick is the bottom pulley in? Several folk here have had problems with that on the HDi; may be the source of the whirring noise

yeah, i though pully too, but its the same pully that was on before with no whirring noise, and it looks in good nick, so im not sure, im gonna alter the tention tomorow and trial and error, i think.

you will get a whrring noise untill the new tensioner settles ive got it on mine atm after a belt change, if your worried re check the belt tension
