Premium fuel

Post by mjb »

Given it was payday and the price was lower than last time I looked, I decided to put some BP Ultimate in my V6, then a couple of days later took it for a bit of Extreme Grandad Driving up to Manchester. Needless to say (else why would I be posting?), the results are quite surprising:

V6 110 miles return EGD to Manc on BP Ultimate: 44.7mpg
V6 110 miles return EGD to Manc on BP Standard: 39.1mpg
Tubby 110 miles return EGD to Manc on BP Ultimate: 43.0mpg
Tubby 110 miles return EGD to Manc on BP Standard: 42.5mpg
Tubby 110 miles return EGD to Manc on Asda Standard: ~35mpg
(remember the above numbers are repeatable to +/- 0.1mpg)

V6 10 miles return to work (very urban) on BP Ultimate: ~22mpg
V6 10 miles return to work (very urban) on BP Standard: ~19mpg
Tubby 10 miles return to work (very urban) on BP Standard: ~14mpg
(fairly wide variance in these numbers to +/- 2mpg)

Not bad eh? Looks like BP Ultimate's actually better value than the standard stuff in this car, PLUS I can get better economy than the old tubby... as long as i'm not red-lining it in 5th...

Wouldn't mind comparing all the fuels again, but I just don't do the repeatable journeys now. I may update this next time I know I'm going up to manc and can pull into a petrol station on fumes...

That's impressive! I really thought the V6 would be thirstier than the tubby! 8)

With both cars on BP standard, the V6 is thirstier on the motorway, but the tubby was always a right guzzler when you use the loud pedal. I'm shocked at just how much difference the Ultimate has made. I'd be lying if I said the power output felt greater (probably is though, marginally), but the economy difference is very real

Not really surprised to be honest. As on a V6 your revs would be a lot lower at say 70mph. I still remember om V6 coupe you could drive around in 5th all day even at 30 mph and it wouls still pull well :D Regards to getting more economy i would imagine the cost of the fuel would cancel out the gains you have saved with the mpg? Have you tried shell optimax?.

Cheaper alternative would be to use normal unleaded and add an octane booster as that really is all the difference really.

The thing with the TDi is I found it would give me 55mpg no matter what I did with it. You get 55mpg at 30mph, accelerate and you get 55mpg, then cruise at 100mph still getting 55mpg - that's 30mpg in the V6 and *much* less when accelerating, right down to a sustained 4mpg  when you've got the needle over the odometer on ye olde autobahn

I've never heard of 55MPG in a Golf before - most people on the VWAudi forum report 38 to 48 at the most (when I was looking into Golfs  )

It was one of the bottom end mk4s from a rental place. Handy when I was commuting to Hampshire every other day

I really did like that car until it started breaking at really inopportune times...
