I've just received my 4 x Free Energy Saving Bulbs courtesy of British Gas
Now they are sending out 52 million bulbs across the UK in an effort to help reduce energy consumption in our homes. But hang on a second! 52 Million?? even if British Gas get these for 50p each it will cost them £26m so, like, what about our freaking Gas bills?? why can't they reduce these first if they can afford all this stuff? -we're all struggling remember
I don't have my electrickery with BG but they appear to be trying to help you use less but charge you more for it in the end
Oh and I fitted one of these bulbs (the 11W = 60W one) and they are crap. If I wanted to be in a poorly lit, grim room I would go and stand in my local post office

I had to drive all the way over to the post office to collect mine before finding out what they were. Fantastic. I've already got energy saving bulbs throughout my house so their little promotion actually cost me money
Welly, the thing with these bulbs is they need to warm up before they reach normal brightness. Great when you wake up in the middle of the night, crap when you need light NOW. Still the big advantage of them for me is they don't blow when subjected to Stoke's pathetic excuse for mains electricity, unlike incandescent bulbs which would blow at a rate of about 1 a fortnight

I know they brighten up after a while but, 15mins?
I only have the Dining room and a shoe cupboard in the house with traditional ceiling pendant fitments and the Dining room has an upwards lamp shade and probably blocked most of it
We all sat there trying hard to focus on what was on our dinner plates (probably a good job we couldn't see TBH what with Mrs Welly's cooking an' all ).
So I now have 2x 11W and 2x 8W? going spare. I bet ebay will be inundated with >>>>>l@@k cheap bulbs<<<< auctions now

That's a hell of a lot of mercury on it's way into the ecosystem
They do them here but they're expensive, plus I'm not sure if it's to do with the irregular (power surges, brown outs, lightening strikes) power supply here but they don't last too long either. I'm waiting for these led ones myself.

Indeed, and I'm not joking either! the accompanying letter says they are sending 52m i.e. 13m boxes of 4 worry not though everyone because the cardboard container (that wouldn't go through m's letterbox) is made from 98% recycled material
I wonder if anyone considered the environmental cost of producing, storing, distributing and delivering all these bulbs vs the "potential" energy saving of the lamps themselves? well they must have done eh? .......eh?

I got ours from Southern Electric a couple of weeks ago, when the postie arrived I got all excited until I opened the parcel and saw bulbs

Probably getting a big hand out from the EU for it.
Have now (reduction in power consumption and emissions from it's production) pay later (ecological disaster - never mind the wildlife, mercury enters the food chain as the highly toxic fat-soluble organic compound methylmercury and works it's way up the food chain to us resulting in birth defects, brain damage etc. etc. etc.)
Edit: Welly you beat me! I agree with both of you then!

Well I set fire to about 2 litres of petrol to go and get mine, which just ended up in a box upstairs... £2.50 well spent? I think not.

Yeah I bought 6 for the kitchen to replace the 50W GU10 halogens. No where near the brightness that's claimed, far to directional with no scatter, and the first one blew within a week, the last one lasted about 3 months . Total shyte!

He he I did the same (sort of) I fitted one LED GU10 in the kitchen temporarily after one of the 9 x 50watters blew and even though I got the ubber-brightest one in the shop it was crap - looked like some sort of dodgy parlour
