2.1 TD Belt Tensioner

Post by chrisbell37 »

Hi,

I have been trying to change the fan belt on my 406 2.1TD A/C model. The problem I am having is releaseing the tensioner pulley to release the belt. I have tried undoing the hex bolt on the pulley that sits towards the top of the engine but the belt wont release? am I doing somthing wrong? or is the tensioner more likley to be knackered?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Chris

Are you sure you're looking at the right thing there? I've not actually done it myself (though if you wait there's be someone who has) but looking in Haynes (BoL) it looks like it's low down, just in front of the crank pulley. It should have a square hole on it for the tensioning tool. Failing that, if it is that tight you're probably going to need an air wrench on it I'm afraid.

Ah that might explain it. There is another pulley with a square hole right near the crank. So im probably undoing the wrong thing. I did notice it seemed very tight when trying to get to the pulley near the crank.

There are two versions of the belt depending on which A/C pump is fitted (if you have A/C), I bought both belts, checked them, they looked the same size, one fits the other one doesn't.
406 estate, 2.1TD, I fixed her, then part exchanged her for a Mercedes E300TD Avantgarde Estate.
Hmmmm, straight 6 goodness!

last time I did one the tensioner was very tight but to be honest I cut the belt off then on re-fitting lossened the tensioner and used a pry bar to take the tension while slipping the belt on.

So it just sounds like its a pain in the ass to fit? I have undone the actual tensioner bolt but it hasnt done alot. It has moved up towards the pulley above? should I try and remove the pulley above do you think?
