Loud deisel noise on 2.1 hdi

Post by festers »

My wife was backing out of a parking spot and the car died and it would not restart. I found the aux belt was bad and changed it. I had to jump start it and when it started the motor seemed to be twice as loud as before. It sounds like the normal diesel running sound but about twice as loud, also when it starts the engine does a bit of shuddering. The sound is not a mechanical sound like bearings ect. Could the injector pump pulley have slipped on the timing belt???

Yep, could be the belt's slipped, maybe even the crank to cam timing's out so you'd best check the timing pronto.

I found out what the noise was. The aux belt tensioner was bad causing the injector pump timing to go off. (believe it or not it was true) Also had the timing belt and water pump changed as the car had done 78,000 miles. I'm 500 pounds poorer but it should run for another 80,000.

So your aux belt managed to put the injection pump out?

Surely the injection pump runs off the cam belt not the aux belt?

I think the Aux belt may have been flung off the bottom pulley, got wrapped up and stalled the engine whilst jumping a tooth on the cambelt  it happened to mbell666!

This guy was lucky as it could have wrecked the head! it was saved by the engine only idleing/parking :|

It will have been 2.1td, not hdi. The hdi timing is ecu controlled, the 2.1td will be timed of the cam belt.

Sounds like a fairly lucky escape, well compared to my experience of failed fan belt!

I replaced the aux belt on my 2.1 tonight.

bit of a twat of a job given that you cant get the square drive on the tesioner at the same time as the allen key to lock it off.

Not to mention the poxy pile of shite squashed metal water pipe getting in the way.

The only reason i didnt batter it ao more than one occasion is that i heard somewhere that they were on massive backorder from pug!

Anyway i got it all back together and fired it up and it sounded really loud, way more so than ever before.

The culprit was that it was not tensioned up enough.

If i looked at the crank pully with the inner wing removed you could see it bouncing all over the place as it left the crank pully and before the air con pully.

More swearing and threatenign to batter that metal pipe and i got it tight enough to stop it flapping and the noise went completely.

Might be worth a look before we get too involved ind in depth with injection timings etc.
