knocking from rear

Post by puglover »

as it says above but now i will try to describe it..........

it happens upon sharp corners left or right and its a single knock... when it knocks the car also does a slight kick sidewards away from the corner....quite unnerving on bends you know.....
it also gives one knock as you reverse turning to the left.
the knock sounds like its coming from the off side and deffinatly from the rear...

i am thinking either the rear anti roll drop links or the other link bar (cant remember what its called)

hope someone can pinpoint this problem more am taking on holiday soon to scotland and dont want to dip into holiday funds to repair the car by too much lol but also want to make sure its safe for the kids to be in...

Antirollbar bushes most likely, the rears were virtually gone on mine when I bought it.

I would agree, the rear anti roll bar bushes fall apart commonly.... a quick look and if you see the rubber cracked the bushes are almost certainly knackered.
I changed mine after a thorough soaking with plus gas every other day for the week preceeding the day of repair. (advice passed on here by James)
The stud under the filling pipe that goes to the tank gets rusty and caked up. I had to undo the nut on it very slowly taking it a quarter of a turn forwards then reversing and flushing it with wd40 to clean the thread off. If I tried turn the nut off any more it would lock solid. It took an hour or so to get it off, the other 3 nuts were off in 15 mins.
There's a white plastic clip holding a bunch of pipes attached to the big rubber filler pipe which I undone to get enough clearance to get to the awkward nut mentioned above It's a bit awkward to see how it works but I would think you could cut it off and reattach it with a cable tie or 3 to stop the pipes rubbing when it comes to re-assembly.

I have the same problem with mine, one of the few small things that's caused it to fail an MOT, anti-roll ends are on my shopping list.

Jack up the corner, grab the wheel at opposite sides and shake. Shouldn't be too hard to work out what's loose

Mine's doing this  set it into a bend and the rear "moves" by itself (interesting experience).

I had an advisory last time about the rear sussy but it wasn't drop links it was something else (can't remember what and haven't been arsed to invesigate) anyway I drive like a homosexual these days to save fuel so don't do fast cornering much now :)

The knocking on mine was cuased by a worn track control arm thing.

I grabbed my wheel at 3 and 9 oclock and could hear and see the offenfine item moving.

got a pair of non genuine items off ebay for about £20 delivered.

Yep, same here; I replaced the antirollbar bushes & drop links but still had play in both rear wheels, the top links were totally f*cked.
Reminds me, I must get the rear wheel alignment checked now I've replaced those!

BZZT! To save fuel you want to be taking corners without slowing down. The more speed you carry through the bend, the less you have to accelerate coming out of it. Braking is like throwing fuel out the window - it's even cheaper to accelerate hard and sneak in front of someone on a roundabout than have to stop and accelerate from a standing start
