Threshing Noise and other foibles!
Pottering about in the 406 today and stuck in traffic which rearely happens to me and the 406 isn't used to it! Three things have managed to happen in one trip!.....firstly the water in diesel light came on (drained a little diesel out but noticed there was no 'o' ring on the end of the drainer and yet I'm sure there used to be!). Light did not go out but after a good run it now has. Secondly the engine started making a horrible threshing noise on idle......reminiscent of a noise I had on a ZX XUD I was selling a few years back.....that turned out to be a auxiliary belt tensioner though the noise also sounds like the diesel fuel pump about to pack up! Thirdly my climate control display has gone out and appears to have stopped working.....am I right to think the it is fuse 21 in the immobilser keypad fusebox.

Not got a diagram to hand, but just get on your hands and knees and check the condition of all your fuses. The standard pug ones (on the D8 at least) have a visible bit of fuse wire on top so they're easy to tell at a glance when they've poppedsidmon1 wrote:climate control display has gone out and appears to have stopped working.....am I right to think the it is fuse 21 in the immobilser keypad fusebox.
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
Re: Threshing Noise
Thanks, got to get some petrol in her so will check in the dark with a torch in a moment and I'll update with a progress report.

Re: Threshing Noise
Fuse 21 was blown so climate now working again
Water in diesel light not coming on still
Threshing noise still absolkutely awful when idling
Get the feeling the diesel pump is about to implode.....think my journey to work tomorrow could be the end

Well it made it to work but the climate control fuse blew again after around 4 minutes
Could it be the air conditioning compressor causing this? Is there a wiring plug I could disconnect to see if that makes any difference.

So have Isidmon1 then wrote:Get the feeling the diesel pump is about to implode

The cambelt too can make this kind of sound when it gets old.
Also if the a/c compressor is goosed the it's probably putting strain on the belts and making extra noise.

Re: Threshing Noise and other foibles!
Was threshing like a good'un again when I started it to go home and then when I got home. Noise does sound like its coming from the auxiliary belt but it's hard to be sure especially when I'm bending over the bonnet with a suit on! Won't be able to look at it properly til Friday or possibly next week at the earliest and need to use the car in the meantime. Cambelt was done at 135K (done 160k now) around two and a half/three years ago. To be fair driveability has been fine since my foray into traffic yesterday but the noise is very worrying! The compressor doesn't work in regards to cooling the air con but it does spin i.e. it's not/wasn't seized though with this climate control/air con fuse continually blowing it's not spinning at the moment but I noticed the pulley was turning independently of the compressor when I looked at it earlier.

Re: Threshing Noise and other foibles!
Been researching a little and it seems the crank pulley could be the culprit, apparently they are in two parts and they can begin to fall apart. Anyone else heard this one and anyone had one let go?

Re: Threshing Noise and other foibles!
had it happen to me, pretty certain its an HDi only problem. Believe the 1.9TD had a solid, single piece, pulley.

What will I have to strip down to examine it?

I'd think a good start would be to take the timing covers off, although I'm not sure if yozu'd be able to start it to see if you can spot the problem or if you'd have to take the belt off and try the pulleys.

Re: Threshing Noise and other foibles!
Would it make sense to remove the auxiliary belt, then start the car and see if the noise disappears. If it doesnt continue to checking the timing pulleys (where possible).

Sounds like a good plan; you would eliminate several areas by doing that. Good luck with it!sidmon1 wrote:Would it make sense to remove the auxiliary belt, then start the car and see if the noise disappears. If it doesnt continue to checking the timing pulleys (where possible).

Re: Threshing Noise and other foibles!
Crank shaft or idle pulley's distinct possibility, but after checking look
at ac compressor because not normal to keep blowing fuses. The compressor
pulley spins all the time it has a electro magnetic clutch and only engages
the compressor if you turn it on manually or the auto climate control does.
Changed mine recently because when engaged it was rattling its tits off
although it wasn't blowing fuses.

Re: Threshing Noise and other foibles!
Is there a wiring plug to the compressor I could disconnect to make the air con compressor (which didn't blow cold anyway) disabled and hopefully not then blowing every fuse I put in!
