Howdy folks, just thought I'd do a bijou postette before I retire for anyone that's paying any sort of attention. Guess what I did today, I gave my other half my D8. Now I can register the thing and drive it while the men from the Ministry of Silly New Laws decided whether they're going to kick me out or not. It still cost me £165 (I bet they hate Christmas ) but it's better than driving a car with no insurance or anything.

I also thought I'd better give it a look over before it goes for its safety test tomorrow:

I had to use two jacks to get it up there because the suspension's so shagged, I used the little guy to get it high enough to get the big boy under it.

I thought I'd better do something about the oily mess behind the engine. I was trying to use degreaser (now I've managed to get some) but it's horrible using it upside down - runs up your arm, drips on your face - so I hooked up my pressure washer to the input of my oil fired boiler, reversed the taps and bingo, instant 150 bar hotwash It's still a hard job to get the lance up there but it's a lot easier than the old fashioned way with a paintbrush . It ran fine afterwards, before you ask. It's actually running in both these pics.

Btw while we were in the robber... sorry, tax office, I asked how much the book price is for my D9 - 2004 HDi 110 estate, 81,500Kn (£9,142.17), I bet you guys could pick a good one up for less than half that.

Looks great but it's got too many problems (rear brake backplates corroded away, front springs sagging badly...) Yep, the front callipers are yellow, I suppose they've been re-sealed at some time and they were bored and had some spare paint...

Tell you what, when it's done I'll shove it all on here and maybe it'll make more sense (if that's possible in this stupid country )

Your motahs are left hookers, so did you buy them when you moved out there? I hope you didn't have to pay their silly prices as your D9 would have been 2 yrs old? when you bought it. When did you move there anyway? why aren't you skint yet? is anything "cheap" out there?

So it's a definate no-no to take your RHD UK car oer there to stay? tax clobbering and registration/testing etc etc etc etc .......

Bought here, unforunatly. I bought the D9 last year, when it was 3. It cost me 13,000 Eurines. May 2004. Pretty much skint, it was bad enough but then the pound lost loads. Houses are cheap, labour is cheap and you can have as many cats as you can eat.

I've looked into that quite a bit, the legal requirement seems to be it's got to be taxed, insured and MOTed in its country of origin and doesn't spend more than 6 months here out of every 12. As you can't get insurance cover for Croatia from any UK insurance company that I can find it'd also need insuring here too. Stuff that. There are a few Canadian registered cars floating about, no idea how they manage that one (although I do know their registration stickers come in the post) but I've only seen one UK registered car that obviously isn't passing through and that's an ancient Transit that very probably doesn't have anything legal about it whatsoever. Maybe I'd be as brave if there wasn't the chance they'd kick me back to Blighty if I did anything wrong.

Anyway, guess what I've got sitting out back

Note black numberplates 'cos it's registered to her, not to me. This little exercise has cost me about 800 quid - yes I could buy this car for that in England!! Thieving bastards. I have the reciepts in the car but I'll get Božena to translate them, then I can see if I can make sense of what I've paid for. I suppose one thing to remember is when you pay for your tax disk it's not broken down into what they use to justify charging you so much. Maybe then you'd realise how little of it is actually spend on roads...
