I brick it every time I get on a ferry  Bit silly really, considering it's MUCH more likely to give up the ghost on one of my "spirited" ("omygodimlateforwork") 5 mile charges to work on a cool engine than on a nice easy 1000+mile motorway drive

steve_earwig wrote:Yes, shame on you Welton  Fancy not running to empty your wallet at the stealers every time your car breaks. Tut tut tut. :P

Never heard of preventitatitative maintenance? (And today I was mostly looking at the disaster of my D8's back brakes, feeling sad, chucking loads of copper slip everywhere and putting it back together before I got too depressed)

Btw did you get underneath it yet?
Who said anything about preventitive maintenance? Who takes there car to the steelers? :? :? :? :? :? I dont do either.

I think you have missed the point steve! I agree with welly if its not broken dont fix it. BUT IF IT S BROKE AND YOU LEAVE IT ONE PROBLEM RESULTS IN ANOTHER ENOUGH SAID!!!!!

Im simply saying if you continue to put of problems its going to become a huge shock when you have a list of things to be done like welly has!!!

Have to say im with you in every way 8) 8) . I have spent silly amounts on cars this is the only car im not so bothered about where im parking it etc.. And only paying out when i need to " So no superchip, uprated clutch and flywheel ,colour coding"

Im curious if the lower engine mount has been causing you a lot of problems? Engine flexs alot more than it should. Possible turbo problem and condensor problem just an idea?

Have to say i have broad sholders so I dont offend easily

There is a lot of decent people in the club mate. So long live the 406oc 8) 8) 8)

I was taking the pi** out of Welters there, and you too I suppose, but I usually target Welters 'cos I know he can take it.

Me, yes me, I take my car to the stealers (although only for parts now, I'd not let them loose on it again :x ) purely because most of the time I have no choice.

What if you can't actually afford to fix that one problem? :(

I reckon if Welton's turbo has given up (which I doubt), then he's had his money's worth out of it, rather than rushing out and buying a new/recon one at the first hint of trouble. Hey, the new one'd be half worn out now, maybe starting to weep...

Anyway, by preventative maintenance I mean like me today greasing the sliding pins on my back brakes 'cos I know they're a bad design. Or I could have waited 'til they siezed of course, but then I'd have to take the callipers off and press the things out, and hope they're not screwed because I know just one pin costs more than 50 quid and there's 4 of the little darlings, not to mention the calliper. So, not necessarily broken but still needed fixing.

Btw Welters, the back ones are yellow too

...like i really really really need to sort my squealing cambelt before it snaps and takes out, uh, everything... and how I really need to get some decent pads and discs on before I end up ploughing into something... and how I really really really really need to get those ditchfinders off my front corners before I... uh yeah

I'll get it all sorted Soon(tm). I'm thinking about the same sort of timescale as I sorted the tubby's cambelt in...

What are the tyres like on the back? Are they better than the ditchfinders or worn enough to justify replacing them with something better, then stuffing the ditchfinders on the back? Best to avoid high revs and caning it 'til you do the belt.

The D8 needs some front disks too. And the tracking done. And and and and and... I have absolutely no idea whatsoever what I'm going to do with 2 cars (answers on a post card). I suppose I need to decide before the start of next month 'cos I can't register the D9 before that. Good news: Divvy on my BT shares. Bad news: It'll pay for 1 month's heating oil.

Looks like we all have our own "to do" lists then :)

This morning the ECU sacked the turbo and turned it off  that was interesting - a free factory fitted 2800rpm rev limiter  :?

The next junction I got to I turned it off and restarted and the Turbo came back

Booked in on the 1st October under the disguise as a works van :P

Ditchfinders all round. I might replace the fronts with some high end tyres this payday, and put the new ditchfinders on the back. The 406 doesn't oversteer easily enough to have it happen by accident, but understeer's a royal pain in the arse. I've even developed the really bad habit of showing off by exiting roundabouts using nothing but my right foot

With the V6? Not happening!

Bang on teamy :( my missus is a complete nightmare with cars - something would have to fall off, explode or violently shake before the car sees any tools

I've just spent £203.00 on her arsetra on a broken rear spring (yes everyone), new eggsauce manifold gasket and CAT gasket (ticking noise) and a fuel filter (was weeping) the manifold gasket was letting to much Oxygen 'in' and was messing with the O2 sensor and the fuelling (not that she'd have realised) the car is really sweet now and super silent but she was largely uninterested by the whole thing :| I wanted the work doing as we've only had the thing 6 months and its a nice motah to be honest.
