interior fan

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

interior fan

Post by highland »

hey folks.....again, starting to think i bought a lemon, my interior fan has decided it can't be bothered working anymore, although it does produce some heat, also the exterior temperature display constantly reads 48c no matter what the conditions, are the 2 related id so what do i do? if not how do i fix both or should i just give in to temptation and blow it up and buy another one,lol   :cheesy:

First off what model car have you got? D8? D9? Climate Control?

My D9 has Climate Control and I had to have the fan motor controller replaced. Pug call it a digital resistor (I'd call it an expensive digital to analogue converter but there you go...). It fits onto the fan motor IIRC in the passenger footwell, behind that bit of sound insulation which keeps dropping down.

Of course if yours doesn't have that kind of controller then the above is completely irrelevant :)

If it's a D8 the problem is almost certainly that the live power cable between the fan circuitry and the motor has burnt out the spade connector, covering it with crud. Other than removing the fan, chipping away the plastic and soldering it up, the easiest fix is to find another fan on ebay or a breakers yard. Be aware that D8 and D9 fans differ, and so do the ones for climate control or manual controls.

What mjb said! :)

I'd forgotten about the terminal spade arcing. Exactly that happened on an old XM I used to have, ended up cutting off the spade socket on the wires and soldering the wires directly onto the spade terminals on the motor.

Time for you to go rummaging in the passenger footwell to check what's what I think...

Yeah a non-trivial application of solder is how I fixed my dad's 8)

Yeah, the blower's only held in by 3 Philips screws. Be careful to disconnect the main connector block first as it's a bitch to wiggle out

probably not the case but worth a try, when my blower stopped working
replaced it with new one and still didn't work, just by chance wiggled the
key in the ignition and it started and stopped traced it to a dodgy live
feed from ignition switch yellow one i think ..

Given 406 blowers are dropping like flies in exactly the same way once they hit about 10 years old, I know what my money's on :)
