Heater blower

Sorry to be posting about something which allready has a lot of topics open for but they all seem to be slightly different circumstances to my problem plus im not sure if my car is a D8 or D9.
Ive got a V reg 406 turbo diesel with climate control and the blowers and air flow direction flaps dont work but the display works as it should when i press the buttons, ive also tried wiggling the ignition key as suggested in other threads to see if i have a dicky ignition switch and the motor still does nothing. could someone let me know what the problem is likely to be or if more info is required for a more accurate diagnosis, many thanks in advance. A reasonable way of telling is what does your grille look like, Venetian blind - D8, honeycomb - D9. Yours is a 1999 so it could be either. Or both

As a guess, loose connector - either on the back of the control panel or on the heater unit. According to the wonderfully accurate and never wrong (as if ) Haynes D9 manual, there's 2 fuses on the D9's heater but I can't work out what would happen if just one blew, worth checking if that's your particular flavour.

hiya steve mine is a d9 by the look of it, ive just bought myself a haynes for it so hopefully i will be able to locate the wire that seems to cause most of the heater problems people have, if not im sure it will help my sparky m8 ( who usually works on buses) to find out what the problem is, when i find out i will post back and let the 406 community know, cheers for your help so far, i might be back for more soon. andy.

Just letting people know that i appear to have 2 problems, first is the ignition switch so we put a direct live in and they still wouldnt work so im going to change the switch and go from there, ill keep you posted.andy.

Hi i'm having problems too.

fuses all good.
motor runs fine when taken out and put on battery.
cant hear the vents moving and the blowers definately not working.

From what i have read, i'm thinking ignition switch, but what am i checking, which wires etc. I have a multi meter and was hoping someone could tell me which wire should be live once ignition on for the heaters.

On mine, it was a control module tucked up directly behind the centre console, accessible from the passenger footwell. A common fault from wat I've read.

Find the heater control module first, as you have taken out the motor, you should know there are two thick wires, one red and one black, trace these wires to the right from the motor and you will find the module, there will be the two thick wires going into the module and coming out of the module, as you can see, left side to the motor, right side from the power source.

With the engine running,( the motor only runs when the engine is running),switch on the heater, then put a test lamp or volt meter to the right side wires, power here but none to the left side (motor) means the module is faulty.

The module is held in by one screw and pulls downward to extract.

They cost 50-odd quid at the dealers.

On some models, I understand there is a spade terminal on the motor that burns out.I would check the module first, just to eliminate it.

ok i have done the above and get no volts from either side so that must point towards the ignition switch whats next guys?

New switch. You don't want to have the blower able to run without the key in - it'll drain the battery very quickly

Ok £146 +vat. I'm not paying that as the car only cost me 200 quid. could i put a manual switch in with a fuse and wire straight to battery?

Any ideas on how to do this?

Just grab an ignition switch & key from a breakers!
