BSI - Please Explain

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

BSI - Please Explain

Post by SwedishBlue »

Hi all, I am the one with a D9 where the windows are not working. I have checked everything that I (and some of you) can think of, no joy, so it looks like a trip to an Auto Electrician. I, now, suspect that it is the BSI because I have noticed a few other electrical faults. Can some one explain what is involved with checking/replacing this unit.
1) Where is it
2) How (and is it worth) resetting it.
3) How are they tested. Will a fault show up on diagnostic testing. Is it removed first for testing.
4) Do you have to disconnect the battery, before taking, the unit, out.
5) Is it worth having the original unit reprogrammed.
6) Where do you get a replacement; scrap yard, dealer or somewhere else.
7) Likely cost in England.
8 ) Does it have to be programmed by a dealer, are there not computer geeks that can do it.
9) Likely cost of reprogramming in England.
10) Does the reprogramming affect the key (I need another, anyway)
11) Anything else that I should know.
Sorry this is such a list but I would like to have a little knowledge before setting out on this adventure. :frown:

Doesn't anyone know the answers to some of my queries.??? There are so many references to the BSI in previous posts but only in general terms. I felt sure I would get loads of replies, but it seems not. Go on you know you want to.

Hiya Swedish.

Dunno much about it but I hope this helps...

6) Replacement is a dealer job really.
7) £400 ish (at least I coughed up £373 for one on a 206)
8 ) If you managed to find one from a source other than the main dealer, my guess is that it would have to be programmed by a dealer.
10) They'll need your key do programme it.

You haven't upset anyone fella. We don't get many BSIs going wrong on the 406 thankfully, so there's not much knowledge about them on here I'm afraid. My only info is from the one on the wifes old 206 crapping out. I don't even know where it is on my 406 and I've had this car over 6 years   :?

Sorry, didn't see this before!
1) Above your right knee.
2) Song and dance. Maybe worth a try.
3) Needs someone with the right kit - talk to BBA.
4) Very advisable, probably best to wait a while too so any charge has time to disspate.
5) Err, pass (BBA?)
6) I'd think a scrapyard would mean being very careful with the serial numbers. I wouldn't have thought it was impossible though.
7) A kidney.
8.) BBA? Might be worth talking to an auto electrician.
9) Another kidney.
10) You'd probably have to sort the key at the same time.
11) Here be dragons.

I found these guys offering a guaranteed and remanufactured BSI for £65:
http://www.autotekelectronics.com/publi ... 3930&img=1
They say it will need a dealer reprog once fitted but at the price it is a big saving, and it is apparently guaranteed. There is no reason why a BSI could not be remanufactured, the electronics are not complex (I took one apart out of interest).

I too am having wierd faults, intermittent wipers unreliable, aircon will not engage (no current all the way back to the BSI) and random window winding oddities so I am considering trying a remanufactured BSI.

:!: A word of warning... don't play with old BSI units (from a breaker) in your car. I did this to my regret. If the other BSI is from a higher mileage car than your own it will overwrite your car's mileage with the higher value - permanently. Mine has gone up from 122,000 to 240,000. Not at all happy.

Good luck.

Ebay special, PO thought a hammer would fix the lift pump. £30 pump from a breakers fixed it better. Bargain.

Hi
I have a digital multimeter and an oscilloscope and when my dash went out along with other faults I was alerted to the bsi which is an interface for the body components which are many. One of the many faults is the cluster of wire connectors under the drivers carpet which suffers from water ingress. I lifted the carpet to find them soaking wet so I dried them out and ensured that there was good connections through each wire. However, I was unable to check the input and out put signals to the BSI because it's a stealer diagnostics kit that's needed. Reluctantly I took it in to the local stealer and they could not identify the problem
first time so they contacted Peugeot who advised them to cut the cables and positively solder the wires together. It seems that the wires need to be 100% good to be effective and also if any of the wires have gone black they should be replaced for the length of the bad portion because the wire will not solder good enough to cure the problem. They persuaded me to let them do the job since they said I could not get into the BSI even if I did the soldering. BIG mistake, they stung me for £530 for about 5 hours work. Were I faced with this again I would solder all the wires together perfectly and see if that did the trick then if it still would not work take it in to the stealer to let them reprogram the BSI - £65. Oh and stop the leak that caused the problem - rear lights.

Thanks once again for your input. It seems that the problem is the BSI unit, BBA-Reman seem to offer a good service. I am just trying to find a way to prove it is the unit first.

Not even that: 4.5 hours at £100+vat/hr = £528.75
