Door lock

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Door lock

Post by pr99 »

Hi all. Looking for some help. My offside rear door won't open. The lock sounds ok when I use central locking (well, it sounds the same as the nearside lock) but it just won't open at all (from inside or out).

I read some posts here and elsewhere and decided to take off the door card. All the rods are moving freely. I've traced the three or four moving parts back as far as a I can but everything ends up in a black plastic housing which surrounds the lock. Others suggested "flicking the switch" to unlock but I can't find anything that moves which would unlock the door!

I'd appreciate any help you could offer. It's really starting to annoy me now!

Christ! I dunno, does your car have deadlocks? Does the outside handle feel as if it's doing anything? Have you tried having someone pull the handle up on the ouside and giving it a good boot from the inside?

Both handles (in and out) feel the same as the other door except at the very last moment when the opening mechanism kicks in: slightly resistance (as you'd expect) on working door, nothing on broken door.

Have tried pushing and pulling and no luck.

I've just been out and tried my D8's, locked there's nothing, unlocked the resistance builds and they unlatch on the last 1/2 inch of movement. It doesn't sound like there's an issue with the door lock, more something bust inside the latch mechanism.

I'm not really sure what to suggest, maybe emptying half a tin of WD into the plastic housing, failing that I think you'll have to cut the housing off (not easy inside the door) and see if you can make it unlatch somehow. Seeing as how you'd probably do best to replace it anyway, how about getting another and finding out how it actually works?

I've only ever had one lock jam myself but I was stripping the car for spares anyway so it got mangled with a club hammer. Last idea: see if anyone with experience answers your post

As Steve suggests, find local scrappy, go & break a few of their's finding out.

At least it doesn't cost you anything. Recommended procedure for anything that feels like it'll break coming apart....

Sounds like it maybe a design fault, as the rear offside door on my 406 is dodge too,
once it wouldn't open, after being shut (by some retard) with the seat belt 'in it'.

I just kept locking and unlocking it until it decided to open, eventually!

It unlocks and opens fine now, but when you try to shut it, it sticks while slightly ajar.
You have to give it a good shove to close, which doesn't feel to healthy (I think it just needs a good greasing!).

Of wot help this little anecdote is to you, I've no idea, but its good to see it ain't just my Pug!
