Indicator Stalk Fault

Hi All,

Been meaning to ask this for a while now, but with MOT time looming, I thought I'd best get it sorted...

Basically my indicators decide to turn on whenever they like, whether I'm turning or not. It tends to be much more apparent within the first 5/10 minutes of driving. After this it seems to behave itself alot more.

I've had a look on the web for any similar probs, and using the 'search' function on these forums, but to no real solution.

My Pug is a 406GTX 3.0ltr V6 Auto, October 2000.

I guess this could be quite a common falut with cars of this age.

What price am I looking at to get it fixed (preferrably not by the local Pug dealer)? Also, would it be easy enough to fix myself?

Sounds like my 'little piece f plastic' might've snapped then! I just found it strange that it only played-up in the first 10mins of a journey

If it is the 'common' fault of a snapped 'piece of plastic', is it a case of replacing just the stalk, or is it a matter of replacing a full assembly with the indicator stalk AND washer/wiper stalk??

From what I've read in my Haynes manual, the latter requires taking off the steering wheel (and airbag assy), whereas the former doesn't. Am I right?

Afaik it's all one bit (have a search on here), it does require the wheel to come off and it costs a small fortune Mine hasn't messed up (yet - although it was playing up) but plenty have, I seem to remember someone rebuilding one once but I've forgotten how to do a search on here.

That's only if it's got the Com2000 controls Steve, I think they were introduced 2001?

Thanks again guys for the replies.. greatly appreciated.

What I'm going to do is take off the upper and lower shrouds of the steering column, and see what I can find (following the Haynes manual instructions!).

This way, by taking out a few screws I should be able to figure if I need to take the whole thing to bits or not. I have seen replacement indicator stalks for around £10 on eBay (providing they're the ones I need).

It's a piece of piss to get the stalk out. You will make your life easier if you release the steering wheel height adjuster and pull the wheel towards you as far as it will go!
If you're feeling brave you can repair some faults on the stalk but there are a lot of components that will ping everywhere!

btw, you mentioned earlier about 2001> models having a 'comm200' fitting. If I haven't got that type, then what is mine likely to be known as? Just out of curiosity

It's just called the indicator stalk!
I'd get one from a breakers or ebay, if you've got front fogs make sure you get a stalk with that control on!

Changed one on a 1999 Xsara - got it from a scrappy on Ebay. Job was straightforward, as Teamy says, you just extend the column, remove the shrouds, undo two torx screws, unclip the connector & out she comes...
I got mine slightly wrong - the foglights were OK, but the dipswitch was for a 4-bulb headlight system & mine had dual filament H4's. (Meant the dips stayed lit on main beam, but otherwise Ok).
I tried fixing the original - I'm usually pretty good at this sort of thing - but this assembly literally erupts into zillions of pieces once you separate it. Not saying it can't be done, but it is real tricky.

Same thing happened when I changed the wiper stalk on my brothers 306

Hi again...

I unscrewed the 2 torx-screws on the lower shroud, and the 2 screws holding the stalk in place... slid her out, and have her sitting in front of me now! No problems at all.. so far!

There looks to be nothing out of place externally, but I'm guessing the problem lies inside amongst the 'zillions' of other nasties in there.

Next job.. source a cheap replacement... with fog light functions!
