Engine Mount
Good Morning All,
I have just registered to this forum after being a Vauxhall owner for the past few years and deciding to give a 406 a try.
I know that these forums are a great way of sharing information and helpfull tips.....
Which leads me nicely to..........
I think that i have an engine mount that has gone west on my new aquisition, how easy are they to replace yourself or alternativly what has anyone paid a garage to do it.
Its a 2000 406 (90) Hdi
Cheers
Stuart

Re: Engine Mount
The engine mount is common here, it's the rear lower mount- you can't even see it from the engine bay.
Simple test is to blip the gas on tickover and if the engine lurches forward a bit i.e. more than 15mm or so then the mount is shot (mine would lurch forward by probably 40 to 50mm.
The labour is horrible as the lower suspension leg has to come off, drive shaft out, gearbox oil out, mount off, press out, press in, etc etc The mount costs £11.00, the labour will cost around 3hrs? £120.00? maybe more
Welcome BTW

Re: Engine Mount
Welcome!
It all depends which engine mount. The top one is a piece of cake to replace on all models I think (can replace it in 10 minutes on a petrol 2.0 turbo
) but the bottom one I gather can be a bit of a pig without a workshop and ramp. The other mount I have no idea about so they can't be frequent goners

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
Re: Engine Mount
Thanks for the replies chaps very useful.
It defenatly lurches forwards when you blip the gas...... i did haggle and get the cost down but not to that extent!!
Still very happy with the car even if it costs me an extra £120 or so its going to save me a fortune after a 2.0 auto Vectra which in my favorite mode SPORT would return around 15 to the gallon....expensive but fun!!
I will cal the mechanic and get a cost.
Cheers

Re: Engine Mount
Yes it's nice to sail past all those Petrol Stations isn't it
You also did the right thing buying the 90bhp version (much simpler) you can also have it remapped to 125BHP for around £250.00 and INCREASE the mpg
Oo, nearly forgot, the egg sauce downpipe has a flexi pipe which doesn't enjoy the excess engine movement and will result in a new CAT too (got the T-Shirt) so check this area and also get a move on with the mount before it's too late!

Re: Engine Mount
Booked it in to have the mount replaced at a local garage which is part of a company that the company i work for own.
There going to do it Tuesday of next week seems a bit cheap mind but he did know which engine mount it was. I did hear that they were short of work so it was ideal timing for a change.

Re: Engine Mount
when I had mine changed it was very quick, as they took the bracket off, used an airsaw to cut the old mount out, then pressed the new on e in and connected the bracket.
DIdnt bother taking anything else of as they said it would just waste time.
It took them the same ammount of time as it took me to change over 8 tyres. (I had never changed a tyre over before and I did end up hitting my fingers loads of time when trying to put the balance weights on in the right places)
You really notice it when you get it changed ;)

Re: Engine Mount
Indeed! it makes a massive difference having the new mount - everything feels tight and it even sounds different
