As per many replies I've seen on this topic, it's usually the injection pump starting to let air in through some seals. Is it affecting the way the engine behaves? Are there many bubbles or just the odd one? I see the odd one on mine, but it doesn't affect mine at all.

I've no idea but that sounds more serious than a fuel line leak :(

Have you got fuel up to the filter?

Are the bubbles in the fuel line to the injection pump?

Did it suddenly refuse to start, or did something happen or has any item been replaced recently like the fuel filter?

Sounds to me like the fuel filter, or a fuel pipe is leaking air in.Check there are no leaks around the hand pump.

Black smoke doesn't really sound like a shortage of fuel...

The black smoke is the strange thing, that usually suggests overfuelling, but the car won't start now.

My normal system is to make sure the basics are right, eg, fuel to the injectors, air filter not blocked etc.

It's a while since I worked on a 2.1TD, does it have an air mass/air flow meter, if so, that may explain the black smoke, or fuel could be injecting into a couple of cylinders which hasn't burnt.

Timing is also a possibility, as already mentioned, but it's such a big job to check that, you don't want to be looking at that until all other possibilities have been eliminated.

its getting fuel to the pump as there is a small bleed valve on the inlet pipe on the pump, the car has had problems in the past with its previous owner who had a pump fitted then found out it was the fuel pump relay is that the box thats housed with the ecu?? apart from that nothings been touched since and it came on suddenly so dont really know where to look next it had a cambelt 10-15k ago so id be surprised if that has slipped,i never heard of that happening on the xud1905 engine and isnt the 2.1 just a bored out version of that?

Check if you have fuel at the injectors, undo the pipes to each injector (slacken the nuts off, not remove), then try to start the engine and see if fuel comes out the pipes.

Check if the engine starts with easy-start, that may give a clue.

I assume you have checked the glow plugs?
