Crunching Third Gear

Post by loz1971 »

Well I have to be honest and say I haven't done anything with the car since I raised this topic, i've been way too busy and the weather here in Cornwall has been sh~te lately.
But interestingly, the wife and I have been driving the car going straight from second gear into fourth, and the fuel economy has gone up by quite a large amount. Now a tankful of petrol lasts a week and a half! before we would fill it up on saturday and by friday we would be filling it up again!!

Maybe I don't want to fix it :?:

Did anybody have any luck fixing theirs? I know Steve_Earwig was going through the same as me, any luck with that Steve?

Apart from the gear thing, I now have a rumbling front offside bearing. I think i'll just run the car until it gives up totally and then buy a Volvo V70, more space for the kids and all that! :|

3rd was still buggering about so I asked my new buddy who works in motor factors (& gives me lots of discounts 'cos he's a fellow biker 8) ) and he suggested flushing the 'box with cheapo engine oil and adding some stuff in a tube. Now I've never been one for additives (snake oil) but this had the magic words "molybdenum disulfide" on the side, which I know about from the days of "oil dag", so I thought I'd give it a try.

I jacked the front up as high as I could get it to make sure I got everything out again, drained and filled it with the cheap stuff and ran it for a couple minutes in gear (which pi$$ed the ABS off but that cleared the moment I started driving it). I did this twice, then filled it with the right stuff and put the MoS2 in.

The result is it's a different 'box, it felt wrong for a while because I was expecting a fight from it still but now I get to concentrate on the maniacs who are trying to kill me, rather than trying not to fluff gear changes.

Thanks for that Steve, i've just looked up the item on the internet and it looks as though I will have to import it from the U.S. or Canada. there is some for sale on e-bay but that is powder.
Is this the right thing, i'm a bit ignorant when it comes to these things and don't want to make the gearbox worse by putting the wrong thing in it :!:

Hi
Well I would forget about having it repaired just for a third gear crunch unless you are a really desperate smoothy and rich - just try my favourite recipe for upsetting Advanced police car driver trainers and Double de clutch up and down, it helps when the synchomesh has foresaken you, just dip the clutch, bring it into Neutral blip the throttle when you are down shifting let the clutch out, push the clutch again then select the gear - don't forget when going up don't blip the throttle. I guarantee you ny hear a cog clash again. The lower the gear the larger the blip and make sure you are in the right gear at the lights when you are stopped - engine running and clutch dipped both hands on the wheel tightly at 10 -2.
