Two thoughts: What make of psring was it? Was it (dare I say) OE or is that an aftermarket one and we're screwed whatever we do? And I found this interesting:

Daft isn't it? in 20 years of driving all manner of sheds I've never had a broken spring and now look at us all (it's not just Peugeots either).

As a concerned reader, Is there any way to prevent the springs from breaking? Can the bearings be greased, any corrosion treated etc etc or is this problem something that will inevitably happen to every 406 owner at least once?!!

It sounds very scary and if this were to happen at motorway speeds, surely a big lump of brown pants shenanigans would be the ultimate result?!!

I wrote about this previously....I'm sure there is a modification to the lower spring mounting...a wider fitting that bolts onto the strut to stop the spring going down onto the tyre.

I suggest looking into this, maybe ring the dealers and ask. I may be getting mixed up with the Renault Megane, same problem, wouldn't hurt to ask though.

I'm exceedingly pizzled off but haven't a leg to stand on, after she's covered how many miles since it was fitted?

Luckily they seem to go at low speeds whilst manoevring or pulling away. And sometimes they just go bang when sat on your drive

GOD SUPA WHATS NEXT? My drivers side went around two years ago but was replaced by a main steelers touch wood its still ok.

The reason being I was told unless you a replacing both sides stick to a geniune as they should sit around the same height once the spring has settled.

Mine was the same sat in the car about to pull off the drive and bang no tyre damage just the spring had gone.

Strange as I thought it was corrosion/age that caused it

I had a KYB spring fitted who I think are an OE supplier.

Thing is I only had the one done

Waxoiling the springs helps stop corrosion/cracking. Mine faied in an area where the black coating had cracked/split.

Have to say I have been driving a few newish cars recently a rover 45 diesel 54 plate for around 3hours and a corsa 57 plate for around half an hour

There is no place like home looks out at his pug . It makes you realise what a dam good car a 406 is. The rover is ok not a bad car. But not a 406. Dont even get me started on the new shape corsa Looks great , the spec is great the drive is very poor I remember how well 206 drove its not even on par with a 206.

Looks like I will continue to cherish the 406 as a dam good car and yes the peugeot brand .
