hi thinking of buying a 406 diesel exec estate in the near future,dont no much about these cars but my mate says these have some sort of filter that costs about 500 pounds and u have to top it up with some fluid that costs about 15 pound a liter.is he pulling my leg as hes a ford man,is there any truth in this? thanks

I'm not a diesel owner, but I know the magic fluid you're on about. It's a fuel additive which is added to the tank every time you close the filler flap (so it's good practice to fill HDi's up by the tank full, not £5 at a time!). It's expensive stuff, but only needs to be refilled in most around every 100k-150k miles or so

As for the £500 it's probably about right given dealer prices (£200 for a set of mats!), but chances are you'd never need to replace it (even so, I'd just grab another from a breakers yard...)

The main expense with diesels seems to be the dual-mass flywheel and clutch on the 110 and 134bhp versions. They should probably be considered consumables and need replacing after about 100k

Howdy. The FAP (think glorified cat) is fitted to some later HDi 2.0 110s and all 2.2 136s. They don't always go wrong but when they do they cost 700+ quid to sort. It's probably worth avoiding them if possible.

The advice is, buy a 2.0 90bhp as there's a lot less to go wrong on them, then get it remapped - this thread will tell you why: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=5853

Agreed. Get a D8 though if you're on a budget - electrical problems are rare and easily diagnosed+fixed

Don't be put off by high milers either, little bits of rubber (gaiters, bushes, etc) tend to rot and need replacing by 150-200k, but pug engines - even petrols - are good for well over 200k

DO be put off by rust!

Speaking as the Forum's unofficial FAP guinea pig, I'm not too concerned about mine. Did some research before getting one, they need to 'regenerate', (burn the soot out of the filter), regularly & will do this OK if they get regular long runs, therefore no use for constant urban motoring. You can clean out the filter if necessary. The diesel additive is expensive, but mine did 72,000 on it's first lot. Dealer charged £140 to refill & reset additve computer. I wouldn't get a later 110 with the FAP system as they lost a lot of torque over earlier examples, but the 136 is a lot different.

All Euro 4 compliant diesels have some form of particle filter, Fords included. I believe current BMW's have to have the filter swapped & go into limp-home mode if more tha slightly overdue...

Not many of them use the additive though, and I've read all sorts of horror stories about the FAPs failing to regenerate properly and the computers throwing a wobbly when the dealers try to reset the additive clock. Personally, I wouldn't give one house room...

im getting confuesed as i want a reliable estate and the more i read on here the more im having seconed thoughts.used to have a 405 diesel had 180000 when i bought it and 254000 when i sold it.all it ever cost me was a cambelt,tyers,balljoints and bits and pieces but nothing major.
,so i thought pug again but now parts seam expensive,engines [hdi] have lots of proplems,clutches are diffrent and expensive to replace but......

i like the shape,i like the exec spec ,and i need something to tow with and they tow well from all reports

so whats the answer???
