2.1 Sticky Accelerator fix.

Post by macumlad »

I recently purchased my 1998 2.1 pug (not sure if its a D8-D9 or whatever???????) & found that one of the problems i had to fix was a very very sticky accelerator cable.
I popped into my local motor factors & bought said cable for £14.

Anyway after putting fitting of the new cable off for weeks i decided to have a go at fixing the old one as it looked a bit tricky to get new one through bulkhead to pedal box.

I found that if i grabbed hold of cable with both hands very tightly (somewhere near where it goes through bulkhead) & rotated it through 180 degrees it instantly solved the problem & now instead of constantly giving my right leg muscles a workout my pedal is light as a feather, you sort of need to roll the cable if you know what i mean, one hand rolls over then the other hand, as it will just keep springing back to its old position if you don't.

I think that over time the cable wears a grove in the inner plastic lining of the cable & if you can rotate it onto a part of the lining that has not been worn then its just like new, it worked for me anyway.

Anyone wanna buy a brand new cable kit......lol.

PS. How do i find out what kind of car i have ...D7 - D9 . ??????

I'd hold onto the new cable, maybe it's the nylon liner worn on the old one, maybe it isn't... No use to me anyway as your throttle pedal's on the wrong side :P

D7?

D8 1996-1999, D9 late 1999-2004 Guess what you got :cheesy: (not that your car's year is important as they didn't make 2.1tds after early 1999 so they're all D8s)

Chances are you'll be back to square one in a few days/weeks so best to change the cable whenever you get some time and good weather
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
